Skillet Cooking Techniques For A Camp Kitchen

The skillet works well for breakfat pancakes.

The skillet is the ultimate camp kitchen tool. The skillet may be used to cook a variety of tasty meals, and it is capable of cooking on a fire, stove, barbecue or any other hot surface. The versatility makes it a must-have for many campsites. In addition to the skillet, a large pot is ideal for cooking pasta, stew and other campfire favorites that the skillet may not handle. Use a metal spatula to control food on the skillet and carry an oven pad to hold the skillet.

Deep Frying

Deep frying is not the healthiest choice for campfire meals, but it does create flavor-rich food. Add a generous amount of cooking oil to the skillet and place it on the heat source. Leave the oil until it is boiling hot. Cover fish, meat, onions and any other food source in flour and drop it into the oil. Be sure both sides of the food are contacted by the oil and check the center of meat to ensure it is cooked through before removing it from the oil.

Boiling and Parboiling

A deep skillet may be used to completely boil noodles and stew. Most skillets do not have enough space to cook a large meal in this manner, but cooking for one or two people allows you to boil numerous different meals. Parboiling involves a cover on the skillet and a smaller quantity of water. The method is used to steam cook large pieces of meat. This allows you to cook the meat through the center without burning it on the outside. Parboiling is ideal in camp cooking scenarios where the temperature may not be adjusted.

Slow Cooking

The skillet is effective as a slow cooker when covered on a low heat setting. Use the skillet for stew, soup, pulled pork and other combinations of meat and liquid that may be left unattended for long periods of time. Slow cooking is best accomplished with the skillet on a raised surface above a fire. You may also cook over propane, but a large amount of gas is consumed while slow cooking.

Cooking Surfaces

The cooking surface determines the type of cooking that is accomplished with the skillet. Propane is ideal because you have control over the heat distribution. Propane is also ideal for cooking quick meals because you do not have to build a fire and burn through resources. You can create a very hot and constant flame. You may also control the heat by raising and lowering the height of the skillet. The skillet may be placed directly on the coals or over a grate.
