Water Your Plants With Soaked Beans & Water

Soak dry beans and use the nutrient-rich water to water your plants.

If you're hesitant to feed the plants in your garden or home landscape with commercial fertilizer products, soaked beans and their water can provide an organic, nutrient-rich alternative to chemical fertilizers. Watering your plants with bean soak water and a mashed bean mixture can provide your plants with vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are essential for healthy, vigorous plant growth. When used regularly, bean soak water and mashed bean mixtures can even improve the health of sickly, ailing plants. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Pour one package of dry beans into a large pot. Add just enough warm water to the pot to cover the beans. Allow your beans to soak for a full 24 hours before proceeding to Step 2.

2. Mash the soaked, swollen beans into a thick paste using a potato masher. Add just enough water to the mashed bean mixture to give it a pourable consistency. Stir the water into the bean paste until combined.

3. Use the mashed bean mixture to water the plants in your garden or home landscape. Pour the mixture around the base of your garden plants and use a hand shovel or hand spade to work the mixture into the top 2 to 3 inches of soil.

4. Cover the surface of the soil around your plants with a 1- to 2-inch layer of natural mulch. For best results, use a lightweight mulch such as pine straw, bark pieces or wood chips. Keep the layer of mulch at least 2 inches from the base of your plants to prevent increased insect activity.

5. Water your plants with this mashed bean mixture once a month to provide them with the nutrients they need for successful, healthy growth.
