Make Soap From Oil

Make your own soap with all-natural ingredients.

Making soap from scratch is a sure way to know you are washing with an all-natural product. It's not as hard as you might think to make soap and it does not take long, either. Before using the soap, however, you must let it cure for several weeks. Many of the oils needed to make soap are the same used to cook with and found at most grocery stores.

Instructions

1. Dress yourself for safety. Wear long sleeves and pants, along with goggles and rubber gloves to protect your body.

2. Pour the lye into the water. Do not pour the water into the lye, as it could cause an explosion. Set the lye mixture near a window or outside, if possible, and allow it to cool to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. The lye and water mixture will become dangerously hot when first combined, make sure to allow the cooling time before using the combination.

3. Place all of the oils into a large pot on the stove and heat on a medium-low temperature until the coconut oil melts completely. Remove the pot from the burner and allow the temperature to drop to 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Pour the lye and water mixture slowly into the oil. Use a stick blender to mix the ingredients until trace forms. Trace looks like thin mashed potatoes or pancake mix.

5. Pour the soap mixture into a soap mold or a large plastic container to harden. Allow it to sit in a cool, dry area for about 4 days, then remove the soap from the mold. Place the soap on a sheet of wax paper and allow it to cure for four to six weeks before use.
