Homemade Designer Curtains

Designer curtains can be very expensive. It is also possible that the right designer curtains for your home won't be available in the color or pattern you desire. It is possible to save money and get the perfect designer curtains for your home by making your own designer curtains. Does this Spark an idea?

Grommet Curtains

Grommet curtains have a contemporary feel. A grommet curtain features hollow metal rings through which S-hooks are attached to and routed on to a curtain rod. Alternatively, a curtain rod can be draped directly through the grommets. If you're interested in making your own curtains, consider grommet curtains, as the grommets are simple to work with. The end result has a designer look unparalleled by more traditional homemade curtains. No one but you will know that your curtains were homemade--unless you decide to brag.

Before you start making your curtains, read over the instructions that come with your grommets. Practice attaching a grommet to a scrap piece of fabric. Once you get this down, you can start making your curtains. An inexperienced sewer shouldn't pick fabric with a repeating pattern, as this can add unique difficulties a beginner may not be able to rectify without help.

Hang your curtain rod and measure to see how much fabric you will need. Once you have your fabric, wash and dry it to pre-shrink it if it is machine-wash-friendly. Steam press dry-clean-only fabric. Iron your fabric, then start sewing your hems. Start with the bottom hem, then move on to the side hems and the top hem.

Once your hems are sewn, add the grommets. Grommets that are close together will have a tighter upper hem and an even bottom hem. Gromments that are far apart will drape gently and have an uneven bottom hem. How you position your grommets is a matter of personal taste.

Eco-Friendly Curtains

There's nothing better than re-purposing older curtains or old fabrics to create a specific look for your home while conserving resources. Measure your windows, then find old fabric that will fit your needs. If you can't find any fabric to re-purpose, purchase organic cotton, bamboo, flax or fabric made out of recycled materials to make your eco-friendly curtains. If you aren't a pro, stay away from fabrics with stripes. Floral and other prints are more forgiving of mistakes than stripes.

Window Treatments Made of Sheets

A good designer look for a bedroom is to have curtains that match your bedding. Some manufacturers don't make curtains to match bedding; if this is the situation you find yourself in, make your own curtains using sheets. The best part of this is that a sheet already comes with a hem sewn in the top that is perfect for hanging on a curtain rod. If this doesn't work, purchase single curtain hanging clips to hang the sheets as a curtain. You might have to purchase several sheets to get the desired look, but the end result will leave you with a well-planned room with matching decor.
