Coconut Oil & Alzheimers Disease

There may be a cure for Alzheimer's disease someday--a natural one. This is mainly due to a discovery made with coconut oil, by a physician from Florida.

Background

In 2002, accountant Steve Newport began struggling with his daily tasks, making more mistakes and taking longer to complete them. He was eventually diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease.

Discovery

Steve's neonatologist wife, Mary, began to research drugs for her husband to cope with the disease. Eventually, she came up with one that showed actual memory improvement. This was in sharp contrast with the ones she had researched, which only focused on slowing the disease's progression.

MCT Benefits

Further research led Dr. Newport to determine that the drug's primary ingredient was an oil composed of medium chain triglycerides. It is known as MCT oil. With ingestion, the liver converts MCT oil to ketones. Since Alzheimer's patients' brains have difficulty metabolizing glucose, the brain's main source of energy, ketones act as an alternative source.

Treatment and Results

Dr. Newport realized that virgin coconut oil is more than 60 percent MCT oil. She bought it for her husband to ingest daily. Consequently, Steve's tremors subsided, his reading improved and he had a brighter countenance.

Significance

The effects of coconut oil on Alzheimer's is pending further research. However, Dr. Newport--as well as several others--see this as a ray of hope for finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease.
