A popcorn bin may be susceptible to rust.
Turning an old popcorn tin into a compost bin helps recycle materials and rebuild the earth. Creating soil by composting kitchen and lawn items is one way to create new, all natural soil for a lawn or garden. When space is limited, or no yard is available for a traditional wood compost bin, a tin may substitute as a mini version. Be sure to keep the lid and have an out of the way spot for the tin bin as odor may occur. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Place a small plastic trash bag inside the popcorn tin and spread it out to cover the sides and the bottom. Fold the top of the bag over the top of the tin.
2. Line the bottom of the bag with coarse composting material and dampen with water. Do not soak or leave standing water.
3. Layer smaller or finer composting material on top of the first layer. Add a few more drops of water.
4. Place the popcorn tin lid on over the edge of the plastic trash bag to hold it in place. Apply a bit of pressure to the lid to ensure it is closed.
5. Gently shake the tin on a weekly basis, or anytime additional material is added.
