Get An Organic Farming Experience

You can get organic farming experience anywhere in the world.

If you are interested in organic farming, you can trade a half day of work on an organic farm for farming experience. Generally the farmer will provide your room and board, including meals, in exchange for a half day of work on the organic farm. You do not need any experience because you will be taught what you need to know. This experience can include anything from milk a goat to pick kiwis.

Instructions

1. Make a list of places to help decide where in the world you want to get this experience. You can make this decision by assessing your financial situation. If you want to get the experience in France, you need to check your finances to see if you have enough money to get there and back. Generally you do not need money for accommodations and food. You must also think about your responsibilities. For example, if you have family you must check in on regularly, it is not practical for you to go to a farm outside of your local area. Once you know the general area where you can get the experience, you can move forward with your plans.

2. Click the link for the region you are interested in on the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms website. WWOOF is the only organization that lists organic farming volunteer opportunities, which allow you to gain organic farming experience at no cost to you. Once you click on your region, you are taken to a page that lists links for individual locations, such as Canada, USA and Hawaii if you click on North America. From there, click on the refined region that you are interested in to be taken to that page.

3. Sign up to become a WWOOFer on the location-specific WWOOF site. A yearly fee is required, which varies. As a member, you have access to all of the organic farm listings for that specific location.

4. Review the profile for the host farms in the area when you want to work. The profile lets you know what the farmers grow, what is expected of you, what type of room and board you receive and the lifestyle on the farm.

5. Use the contact information on the host farm profile to make contact with your selected farm. Confirm availability and dates and ask any questions that you have. If you want to move forward, let the farmer know that you would like to volunteer. Once you set it up, you just have to arrive on the specified date to get your organic farming experience.
