What Does Ecotourism Involve

An ecotourism adventure often involves water travel.

People who are ecologically and socially conscious often seek out a form of travel called ecotourism. According to the International Ecotourism Society, ecotourism is travel that helps the conservation of a local environment by avoiding activities that degrade fragile environments. It also improves the lives and well-being of local residents.

Education

Ecotourism vacations encourage you to observe and learn about the flora and fauna of a region. You're also encouraged to meet local residents and experience the environmental, social and political aspects of their culture.

Community Support

Ecotourism supports the economy of local communities by encouraging tourists to patronize local businesses, hotels and restaurants. Locals plan and manage the tourism activities and hire local residents whenever possible.

Respect

Ecotourism encourages tourists to respect local residents, their customs and their culture. Tourists should avoid being destructive to the environment. They should also avoid purchasing souvenirs that are made from endangered plants and animals.
