Shea butter is a naturally occurring fat commonly used in culinary and cosmetic applications, similar to kokum and cocoa butter. Unrefined shea butter is produced in a manner similar to peanut butter. The nuts of the shea tree are hulled and pulverized until a thick paste, or butter, forms. Shea butter is commonly used as a cooking fat and condiment in indigenous African cuisine and, like whole dairy butter, deep-freezing it gives it a shelf life of up to six months.
