What Subjects Do You Need To Become A Chef

Gastronomy classes teaches you about the effects of history and culture on food.


Chefs can find work in restaurants, with caterers, or as personal chefs for private homes. A culinary degree prepares you for all of these different career paths. While in school, students take a wide range of classes from math to chemistry to wine tasting to pastries.


Cooking Classes


During classes on techniques and methods, you learn about the concepts, skills, terminology and methods used in professional cooking. This includes learning knife skills, season a dish and developing a range of sauces. You will take classes on contemporary restaurant cooking, including plate presentation and buying, storing, and using key ingredients. Classes on regional and international cuisines allow you to explore the exotic ingredients and recipes of other countries.


Baking Classes


Skill development classes teach you baking principles and theories, fundamental production techniques, ingredient functions and preparations. Baking technique classes include lessons on methods such as the creaming method, pre-cooked method and foaming method. In classes about baking ingredients you learn to recognize and pick out quality grains, diary products, spices, flours and other important ingredients. Your professors in equipment technology classes teach you about the costs, benefits and drawbacks of different types of baking equipment.


Math Classes


Most people don't instantly think of math classes as preparation for becoming a chef, but math plays an important role in the culinary arts. You will need to take a basic bath skills class to ensure you know use whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages, since these concepts apply to recipes and cooking. Math classes designed specifically for culinary students teach you the standard units of measurement, unit conversion, percents, ratios, yield tests, recipe scaling and recipe cost analysis.


Nutrition Classes


Nutrition and cooking go hand in hand. In your nutrition classes you'll learn basic chemistry so you understand how foods break down, how the body normally digests and how metabolism works on a cellular level. These types of classes also cover diseases that affect nutrition.


Business Classes


Many chefs own their own restaurants. During hospitality and service management classes you'll learn about professional communication, service sequence, dining room preparation and cash handling. You may also take classes on economics and financial management.
