Tell If Plain Yogurt Is Spoiled

Make sure yogurt is fresh before using it.

Plain yogurt, made with milk fermented by the addition of live cultures, provides nutrition that is easy to digest. The natural bacteria present in yogurt helps to balance the gastrointestinal tract, especially useful following illness or antibiotic use. When you store plain yogurt in the refrigerator, check the container carefully before you consume it. Although yogurt stays stable for many days in the refrigerator, you should know tell if plain yogurt is spoiled to ensure that you do not consume tainted yogurt. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Check the "Best Before Date" stamped on the container of yogurt. Although yogurt may stay edible for a few days past this date, use this date to determine the freshness of plain yogurt. As long as you stored the yogurt in the refrigerator continuously, the yogurt should stay fresh at least through the "Best Before Date." If this date elapses, examine the yogurt with extra care to ensure that it is not spoiled.

2. Open the container and examine the inside of the lid. If yogurt is on the inside of the lid, look for evidence of mold or discoloring. The mold may be dark or the mold may be a pinkish color. If you see evidence of mold on the inside of the lid, discard the yogurt.

3. Examine the top surface of the yogurt, especially around the edges of the container. If you see any discoloration --- black, gray, brown or pink --- discard the yogurt.

4. Smell the yogurt. The yogurt should smell like acidic yogurt. If you smell an unpleasant odor coming from the yogurt, it may no longer be fresh.
