Store Bottled Water

Store bottled water properly to prevent spoilage.

Whether you want to store water for regular personal use or in preparation for an emergency, proper storage is key to preventing contamination. Use commercially bottled water or your own home water system for a water supply. The Federal Emergency Management Agency provides specific guidelines for storing both purchased and homemade bottled water to prevent contamination and extend the life of your bottled water. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

Commercial Bottled Water

1. Store bottled water in its original container.

2. Place bottled water containers in a cool, dark place away from heat and light sources.

3. Keep the container sealed until you are ready to use it.

Homemade Bottled Water

4. Store bottled water only in food-grade water storage containers available from camping supply stores or reuse 2-liter plastic soft drink bottles.

5. Wash the containers with a mild liquid dish washing soap and water before storing water in them. Rinse well to remove soap residue before filling with water. If using soft drink bottles, sanitize the bottles as well with a mild bleach solution of 1 tsp. bleach for every quart of water. Thoroughly rinse out the container after sanitizing it.

6. Fill the bottles completely full of tap water. Screw on the original cap tightly. Do not touch the inside of the cap when placing the cap on the bottle.

7. Write the date on the outside of the water container with a permanent marker.

8. Store the bottle containers in a cool, dark place away from light and heat sources.
