Spelt and wheat are highly nutritious.

What is Spelt?


Spelt has been around long before wheat hybrids. It is an ancient grain that has a nut-like flavor. It is a cousin to wheat. Spelt is not seasonal and can be found at health food stores. Spelt can be purchased as spelt flour or as a whole grain. It can be used in the same ways as wheat and is especially good for making breads and pastas. In addition, spelt can be used in its whole grain form and cooked like rice.


Benefits of Spelt


Many people who are intolerant to wheat can eat spelt and spelt products without any health issues. Spelt is considered a whole grain and contains manganese, copper, vitamin B2, niacin, and thiamin. Eating products made from spelt is helpful for people who suffer from diabetes, migraine headaches and atherosclerosis, due to the combination of nutrients. Since spelt is a whole grain, it is also helpful in terms of reducing high blood pressure and the risk of heart attack. Spelt is also a good source of dietery fiber.


What is Wheat?


The wheat kernel is used to make wheat products. The kernel consists of the endosperm, of which white flour is made, bran, which is in whole wheat flour, and germ, which is also in wheat flour. Bran and wheat germ can be bought separately and can be added to a variety of foods such as yogurt and cereal. Wheat is a whole grain and is grown in 42 states in the United States, with Kansas producing the most.


Benefits of Wheat


Wheat contains more vitamins and minerals than spelt. In terms of vitamins, wheat contains B6, niacin, thiamin, folate, riboflavin and pantothenic acid. Wheat also contains minerals such as manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, selenium, zinc, copper, iron and potassium. Consuming wheat helps maintain a healthy metabolism, helps prevent gallstones and breast cancer, and helps reduce high blood pressure and the effects of diabetes. Wheat is used to make pastas and bread and can be used to help ferment alcoholic drinks.
