Summer Art Programs In Italy

Florence, Italy

For many artists, novice or expert, the ultimate goal is to study Italian art in Italy. Although it sounds extravagant, many people, in lieu of a traditional vacation, do take advantage of summer programs in Italy that cater to adults of all levels of artistic expertise. Whether your passion is lingering in Florence's Uffizi Gallery, savoring the art and architecture of medieval towns or painting water colors of the Italian countryside, there's something for everyone.

Lorenzo de' Medici--Italian International Institute

Since 1973, the Lorenzo de' Medici-Italian International Institute's workshops have been offering summer arts programs for students 18 years and older. Thanks to the programs, students from many countries have deepened their awareness of Italian culture and art. Each one-month workshop combines studio and classroom instruction in Florence as well as field work, where students are exposed to the art and culture of Florence, Chianti and Tuscania. If you like to paint, you might take the watercolor workshop, where your subject matter is the countryside, medieval villas and ancient vineyards of Tuscany. Another popular offering is an art restoration workshop that provides hands-on experience restoring 15th- and 16th-century paintings--or you might want to try another popular workshop, the Tuscania Oil Painting Workshop: Painting Under the Etruscan Sky. The cost of workshops varies. Check the Lorenzo de' Medici website for rates and information about accommodations.

Cesma Formazione & Cultura

The Cesma Formazione & Cultura's "The Charter Program: Ancient Italian Art Production" is a unique summer program that immerses students in Northern Italian culture while they study art and art history. The one-month program typically begins in June. You'll study the production techniques of fresco, egg tempera, mosaics, paper-making, bookbinding and gilding used by Roman, medieval, gothic and Renaissance artists, while you create your own work. Studios and student housing are located in the village of Cuorgnè, in the foothills of the Italian Alps near Turin. The area has much to offer in the way of medieval castles and churches and the culture of Northern Italy. The program includes a guided visit to Milan and a guided tour of Florence. This year's program is from June 6 to July 4, but be sure to check the website for changes. The price of the program's workshops vary from $500 to $3,000. For more information or to check for rate changes, visit the website. The email is charter@cesmaonline.org.
