Make Organic Cosmetics

Try making soap with rosemary.

A great adage to remember when using cosmetic products is: If you won't eat it, don't put it on your skin. As everything we place on our faces and bodies is eventually absorbed into the system, it makes more sense to eliminate as many potentially dangerous products as possible. Petroleum products such as mineral oil are common in commercial cosmetics, and they potentially block pores and prevent skin from breathing. Fragrances also often contain petroleum, as well as synthetic chemicals that can harm instead of help the skin. Propylene glycol, found in paint and antifreeze, is a common ingredient in many shampoos and conditioners. It can compromise health when used regularly. Making your own organic cosmetics is a perfect way to ensure that you know exactly what you are putting on your skin. Organic cosmetics are easy to make and allow you to be creative with natural products as you become familiar with them. The base of most organic cosmetics consists of water or oils such as olive, coconut, sweet almond or tea tree. Ingredients can include honey, yogurt, oatmeal, brown sugar, chamomile, various fruits and vegetables, flowers, and even chocolate. Here is an example of one easy-to-make organic mask and scrub. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Old Fashioned Oat, Nut and Flower Face Mask or Scrub

1. Place oatmeal flakes in small amount of water to soften.

2. Drain oatmeal.

3. Place oatmeal in blender along with chopped almonds.

4. Grind and blend until you achieve a fine texture.

5. Mix rose petals with lavender flowers. Place a small amount aside to crush by hand. Put the remainder in the blender with oat and almond blend.

6. Blend for a few seconds, until the flowers are mashed in the oat and almond mix.

7. Remove mixture from blender and place in an airtight jar. Before sealing, place the remaining crushed flowers on top of the blend.

8. Use mixture as a facial mask by mixing a small amount with almond or coconut oil until you have a paste. Smooth on face, neck and decolletage and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing off. The mixture can also be used as a facial scrub by applying it directly to damp skin to gently exfoliate and soften.
