Jelly beans
are sugary confectionery candies popular at Easter time.
Jelly beans are one of America's most popular confectionery candies. They are loved by children and adults alike and were Ronald Reagan's favorite candy. The tasty morsel's primary ingredient is sugar. The ellipsoidal bean-shaped treats come in various sizes and feature a hard shell with a gummy, jelly-like interior. The beans are manufactured in a wide assortment of flavors and colors. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Gourmet Beans
Gourmet jelly beans are smaller, softer and more expensive than standard beans. They are produced in a mind boggling array of fruity and spicy designer flavors. One of the most popular brands, Jelly Belly, features 50 official flavors. There are many other gourmet brands of jelly beans made by leading candy companies such as Brach and Ferrara. The beans have similar flavors but carry different names according to their brand. They're sold as a mix of assorted flavors but can be obtained from the manufacturer in one flavor.
Fruit Flavors
Fruit flavors include traditional favorites such as blueberry, orange, coconut, pineapple, lemon lime, lemon, peach, sour cherry, cherry, raspberry, and red and green apple. Newer exotic fruit flavors are cantaloupe, berry blue, mango, tangerine, wild blackberry, banana, pomegranate, kiwi and pink grapefruit. Sometimes watermelon-flavored jelly beans have a green skin and a red center in imitation of real watermelons. Some of the beans have a speckled exterior to suggest their internal flavors.
Drink Flavors
Many premium jelly beans flavors are based on tasty beverages as opposed to the traditional lineup of standard jelly bean flavors such as licorice, cinnamon, ginger, mint and wintergreen. Mixed drink inspired flavors include margarita, mai-tai, strawberry daiquiri and piña colada. Flavors based on soft drinks are cream soda, root beer, various types of punch and several name brand soda pop flavors from A&W, Dr Pepper and Sunkist. Other beans feature the drink flavors of smoothies, coffee and champagne.
Novelty Jelly Beans
Oversized and giant-sized jelly beans are often flavored with fruit pectin to produce the basic jelly bean flavors. Pectin beans come in black, white, red, green yellow, brown, orange, purple and pink colors and are associated with the standard jelly bean fruit and spice flavors. Jelly beans that look just like rocks are a popular novelty item. The beans feature marbled exteriors and flavors such as grape-granite, lemon-limestone, peach-pumice and berry-basalt.
