Types Of Culinary Schools

There are three different types of culinary schools.

When considering culinary schools, there are many options from which to choose. It is important know which aspect of the culinary field is most appealing to you in deciding which school is best. This helps determine the most useful education curriculum. There are four basic types of culinary schools from which to choose: culinary institutes, colleges and universities, online educational institutes, and international study programs.

Culinary Institutes

Most culinary institutes offer associate's degree programs in cooking, catering, kitchen management and pastry. Many of these programs take two years to finish. Choosing an associate's degree in culinary arts is a helpful entry to the culinary world. Essentially, most culinary arts associate's degree programs include basic techniques, such as knife skills, proper kitchen procedures, and food presentation. Many programs also may offer speciality courses on baking, cheese making, mixology, pastry and restaurant operations.

Colleges and Universities

When considering types of culinary schools, consider the number of colleges and universities that offer a Bachelor of Arts or Science in the culinary arts. Keep in mind that bachelor's degree programs in professional culinary arts programs emphasize management training. Additionally, many culinary schools with Bachelor of Arts or Science programs require a minor in business management.

Online Culinary Education

Online schools offer an education in the culinary arts that does not require classroom time. However, most programs do not offer courses in cooking or pastry, but in culinary arts management, the business and logistics of food. Integrating business topics relevant to the hospitality industry and management field, with the flexibility of online classes, make this education track adaptable for online learning. A computer with access to the Internet is the main requirement for an online culinary school.

International Culinary Schools

International culinary schools offer an experience that goes far beyond just basic education. Pursuing a culinary education in France, Italy or England can develop a chef's sense for historic, rich and sophisticated cuisine. Specializing in American and French fusion, Canada offers renowned cooking schools in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. Offering education in the world's most bizarre foods, Asian cooking schools teach advanced knife skills and indepth education regarding spices.
