Choose An Area Rug Size

Whether you have hard wood floors or wall-to-wall carpeting, an area rug can add interest to a room. Area rugs come in different shapes and sizes. Area rugs can add a splash of color to a dull looking room. An area rug's design can provide corresponding interest or texture to a room. Whatever the rug's purpose, the correct size is imperative. 1. Decide how and where you want to use an area rug. You may want to use an area rug as a wall decoration or as a floor covering.


2. Determine the shape of area rug you plan to use. Common shapes of area rugs are square, rectangle, oval and circle. The shape of the rug affects the size of the area of the rug.


3. Measure the area or space in the room or the wall where you plan to use the area rug.


4. Decide how many extra inches or feet to add to your floor measurement to accommodate furniture. You want to anchor the area rug with furniture, such as end tables or chairs. Never free float an area rug. Area rugs will create unity in a room by tying the furniture together.


5. Record the measurements. You will want to retain the measurements. Write the measurements on a note pad or paper. Area rugs come in standard sizes.


6. Select the size rug that best corresponds to your space measurement.
