Start A Bread Business

Bread baking is an ancient craft that continually is being reinvented by talented modern bakers. To start a bread business you must have a passion for bread and a way to distinguish your offerings from the many other available options. Develop a clear idea of the type of customer who is going to enjoy the particular kind of bread you plan to offer and consider ways to market your offerings to that particular target market.

Instructions

Start a Bread Business

1. Decide whether you plan to operate a wholesale or retail bread business. If you will be selling your bread wholesale, identify potential wholesale clients, such as restaurants, natural foods stores or mainstream grocery stores. If you will be retailing your products, decide whether you will operate a retail storefront or whether you will sell through other direct sales venues, such as farmers' markets.

2. Contact state and local agencies and ask about permits and licenses for owning and operating a bread business. Call your local health department and inquire about the permits, equipment and protocols for baking and distributing bread. If you will be hiring employees, register with state and federal employment agencies.

3. Choose a site that is appropriate to the type of business you plan to operate. If you intend to retail your bread in your own storefront, find a centrally located spot with foot traffic or ample parking. Design and build a commercial kitchen that complies with local health and fire codes.

4. Refine your recipes and adapt them so you can produce them in volume. Streamline your production processes by using variations on basic recipes and multiple uses for staple ingredients. Figure the cost of ingredients for each product and make sure that this amount does not exceed 33 percent of the price you will charge.
