South Jersey Culinary Schools

Culinary schools in South Jersey can prepare students for careers as chefs.


Culinary school is a post high school option for people who want to be chefs. There are culinary programs available throughout the United States with a number of locations in the South Jersey area for those living in that area who wish to attend a school close to home.


Atlantic Cape Community College


Atlantic Cape Community College has an Academy of Culinary Arts that is located on the main campus of the college in South Jersey at Mays Landing. The culinary center where students learn and train is a 29,000 square foot facility. Teaching is done through classroom study and working kitchens. There is even a restaurant called Careme's that is located on site where students practice skills and techniques for the public who dine there for lunch or dinner. Pastry skills and baker training is also offered at the academy, and the school has a retail bakery on campus where student-created pastries and baked goods are sold. Degree programs are full time, and class schedules fall in to three time frames. Students can attend classes from 7 a.m. through 12 p.m., 12:30 p.m. through 5:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. through 10 p.m. The flexible scheduling is made available for students who have other jobs or responsibilities. As of August 2010, the program costs $6,870 per semester for tuition and fees. Books, a knife set and uniforms are extra. There are three program tracks available for degree study: culinary arts, food service management and baking and pastry.

Ocean County Vocational Technical School


Ocean County Vocational Technical School is both a vocational and technical school in Toms River, New Jersey. The culinary arts program is available to both high school students and to adults after they have completed high school or obtained their GED. There is an additional entrance test for potential students that tests their preliminary knowledge on the food service industry. The culinary program for adults is a one-year program that consists of 900 hours of study and prepares students for careers in the culinary arts including positions such as chefs and cooks. The course of study involves classroom study, hands-on experience and kitchen work. The school has students practice skills by operating and working at the Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station which is located nearby to the campus.

Atlantic County Institute of Technology


The Atlantic County Institute of Technology located in South Jersey, in Mays Landing, offers a degree program in the culinary arts. This program is specifically designed for students still in high school and serves as a starting point for them to further pursue a career in the culinary arts. Additional adult education classes in the culinary arts are offered on occasion, but the primary course offered is for those still in high school. The Institute qualifies as an alternative high school in New Jersey. The coursework focuses on primary areas such as commercial food preparation, baking including breads, pastries and desserts and customer service. The skills acquired through this program are designed to prepare students for continuing on to post secondary education culinary arts degree programs.
