Day Boarding Schools

Private schools can afford to hire the best teachers.


In America, there are two types of private schools: day schools and boarding schools. At day schools, students study during the day and then are free to go home. At boarding schools, students live and study at the schools' premises at all times. However, some primarily day schools offer boarding classes and some predominantly boarding schools have some day-only classes.


Phillips Academy Andover


Phillips Academy Andover is the third-best private school and the best school with a boarding option in the United States, according to Forbes. The school is located in Andover, Massachusetts. In the 2010 to 2011 school year, the school had 818 students enrolled in boarding classes and 291 students in day classes. The student-to-faculty ratio is 5-to-1. The school also has a large endowment of $641.8 million. Notable alumni of Phillips Academy Andover include former U.S. presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.


Phillips Exeter Academy


Phillips Exeter Academy, located in in Exeter, New Hampshire, is another highly-regarded private school that has both day and boarding options. The school, founded in 1781, educated many bright young people, including Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook. The large endowment of $854 million allows Phillips Exeter Academ to hire highly-trained teachers. About 83 percent of all faculty members have advanced degrees.


Deerfield Academy


Deerfield Academy, founded in 1797, accepts children for grades nine to 12. The school is located in Deerfield, Massachusetts. For the 2010 to 2011 school year, the boarding option cost $43,800 while the day school tuition fees stood at $31,400. The most attended colleges students enter after graduating from Deerfield Academy include Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, Yale and Georgetown.


Choate Rosemary Hall


Choate Rosemary Hall was established in 1890. As of 2010, the school had 625 boarding and 225 day students coming from 40 states and 45 countries. Choate Rosemary Hall accepts only the brightest students, with a GPA of incoming students of 3.73. Around 74 percent of faculty members hold advanced degrees. After graduation from Choate Rosemary Hall, its students enter top colleges such as Georgetown, New York University, Yale, Columbia University, Princeton and Harvard. The school is located in Wallingford, Connecticut.
