Use Coconut Milk In Place Of Cream In Coffee

Coconut milk substitutes for cream in coffee.


Coconut milk is made by soaking shredded coconut in water. You can make your own coconut milk or buy canned coconut milk. Cooks use coconut milk in many dishes, particularly Thai cooking and curries. It can be used as a milk substitute, but does not contain calcium. If you're lactose intolerant or allergic to the casein in milk, or a vegan who wants to avoid animal products, you may prefer coconut milk as a substitute for cream in your coffee. The coconut milk will not be as thick and rich as real cream. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Shake the can of coconut milk before opening. This helps mix it well and helps it stay thicker. Canned coconut milk is thicker than the varieties sold in cartons in your grocer's refrigerator case. Canned coconut milk is closer to the consistency of dairy cream.


2. Open the can of coconut milk with a can opener.


3. Pour the desired amount of coconut milk into your coffee. Stir. Coconut milk has a consistency equivalent to dairy milk, slightly less thick than dairy cream. You may need to add more or less coconut milk, depending on how creamy you like your coffee. Coconut milk does not have a strong coconut flavor.


4. Add sugar as desired. Coconut milk has a sweetness on par with dairy milk. In recipes, coconut milk can be substituted for dairy milk 1-to-1, so you shouldn't need to adjust the amount of sugar.

Preserve Homemade Dog Biscuits

Preserve Homemade Dog Biscuits


You are Fifi's personal homemade dog biscuit chef and she loves you for it. Unfortunately, you don't have time to make her a fresh batch every day. To keep those double batches of delish doggy delicacies from going bad, you have three options: freezing, vacuum packing or dehydration. To extend the life of the biscuits, you can add some natural preservatives, such as vitamin E, honey or citric acid, to your recipe before you pop them in the oven. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


Freezing Your Homemade Doggie Treats


1. Cool the biscuits completely and let any icing decoration dry prior to storing. This will prevent moisture buildup and mold growth in the storage container.


2. Place hard dog biscuits into a zip-top freezer bag or a freezer-safe plastic container.


3. Use wax paper between layers of chewy biscuits so they don't stick together once frozen.


4. Close the bag or container, making sure to get out as much air as possible.


5. Freeze. Chewy dog treats in zip-top bags should be laid flat to prevent them from sticking together. Dry dog biscuits can be stored upright.


Vacuum Packing Your Hard Homemade Doggie Treats


6. Using recommendations of the manufacturer of your vacuum packing machine, cut a length of bag plastic about 12 inches long. Seal one end, as directed by the manufacturer.


7. Place the biscuits in the bag.


8. Seal the other end of the bag with your vacuum packing machine. Follow the directions that came with it. Keep the sealed bag in the freezer, refrigerator or in a dark, dry pantry. Dog biscuits will last about eight months in the freezer and two months in the refrigerator.


Dehydrating Your Hard Homemade Doggie Treats


9. Dehydrating removes moisture from food and inhibits mold growth; you can use a conventional or convection oven or a home dehydrator to do so. Using a dehydrator frees up your oven and minimizes heat, so you can bake in the summer.


10. Cook the biscuits at a lower temperature and extend cooking time to remove as much moisture as possible without burning them. Use a regular or convection oven.


11. Cook the dog biscuits according to the recipe. Once finished, place in a home dehydrator for six to eight hours, or overnight.


12. The length of time it takes to dehydrate depends on the thickness of your biscuit, its moisture content and the amount of moisture in the air.

Make Christ Anointing Oil

Christians believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God. They pray in his name and believe in his miracles. One of the most common prayers or petitions is for healing. The Bible describes instances in which olive oil was applied to an individual as representative of Christ's anointing. The "anointing oil" was applied to the forehead or wherever the sick person needed. Today, priests and pastors make their own anointing oil to use at healing services or for praying with the sick.


Instructions


1. Place the funnel into the opening of the small glass bottle. Open the bottle of olive oil. Gently pour the olive oil into the glass bottle. Do not overfill the bottle.


2. Wipe the outside of the small glass bottle with a cloth. Wipe away any oil that may have spilled over. Place the cork inside the bottle.


3. Pray over the bottle of oil in the name of Christ. Ask God to bless the oil and place his special anointing on the contents. Declare that the oil will be used solely for prayer.


4. Write "Anointing Oil" on the label with a permanent marker, then stick the label to the front of the glass bottle. This will identify the bottle and keep it from being used for something other than prayer.


5. Place the bottle somewhere you can get it during prayer. At church you might tuck it into the shelf of a pulpit or somewhere near the platform. During a prayer meeting you might keep it nearby to use while praying for the sick.

Apartment living isn't for everyone, and it can be a very expensive way to live. You need to decide that you are going to live a frugal life and then make choices and decisions based on that. In this article we'll explore some of the options and ideas for living a frugal life in an apartment.

1. The very first step, and the most important one, for living frugally in an apartment is renting an apartment that you can truly afford.


Financial experts typically recommend that you spend no more than 25% of your gross monthly income on rent. Thus, if your gross income is $2000.00 a month, your apartment should rent for no more than $500.00 a month.


One way to get around this is to share the apartment expenses with a roommate. Not everyone is cut out for living with a friend or stranger though so make sure you really want to do this before taking this route. Otherwise, just stick to spending less on an apartment, even if that means it's a smaller and less luxurious apartment than you might prefer.


2. Now that you've got your apartment, the next step in living frugally is to keep your monthly utility expenses as low as possible.


Learn ways to use less electricity and water, if you pay for these over and above your rent, as well as ways of cutting your heating and cooling costs.


Every dollar you can save on your utility bills is a dollar you can use for school, travel, investing, or saving purposes.


3. To furnish your apartment in the most frugal fashion, furnish from home. Your parents home that is. Beg or borrow all the furniture you can from mom and dad.


Whatever furniture you still need can be purchased cheaply at your local thrift store, or even gotten free from freecycle. Keep your eyes open for furniture bargains, wherever you go. Don't overlook yard or estate sales either, sometimes there are some terrific bargains to be had.


4. Hopefully your apartment is close to your work or school, as well as being close to grocery, and other stores, and entertainment. By choosing an apartment near your work and with nearby stores and other conveniences you save on transportation expenses, including car parking expenses.


You can also save on transportation costs by ditching your car completely and walking or riding a bike everywhere you go. Borrow a friends car for those few times you absolutely need one, or take the bus.


5. Eat at home. Cook simple and healthy food. Buy in bulk, cut way down on unhealthy empty foods and eat less meat, dairy, and high fat foods.


Get a cookbook from the library if you don't know cook. Eating out, whether at the local fast-food joint or at an expensive restaurant, is a terrible strain on your budget.


Refuse to buy those expensive coffees in the coffee shops too; instead make your own coffee and take it with you in your own metal container.


Keep coffee supplies at work, and make your own coffee there also.


Avoid the vending machines at work or school by bringing your own snacks, or simple food with you. Bring your own refillable water container too.


6. Declutter and simplify your apartment and your life by selling or giving away all the stuff you never use or wear. Your apartment will look and feel better, and your pocketbook will benefit too.

Infuse Olive Oil With Rosemary

Both olive oil and rosemary are prevalent ingredients in Italian cooking. What could be better than creating a tasty marriage of the two? Olive oil is considered a healthy oil because it is full of monounsaturated fat, which can lower your risk of heart disease and reduce your bad cholesterol levels. The aroma of rosemary is spicy and warm, and its needle-like leaves add a zing to any dish. Infusing olive oil with herbs is a simple process that almost anyone can do with a little practice. Instructions


1. Clean and dry your rosemary. Wash the herbs with a slightly damp washcloth and set them aside to dry. You don't want any water on the rosemary because the salts in the water will break down the herbs.


2. Warm your olive oil. Pour your olive oil into a small sauce pan and heat it over a low flame until it is warm. The warming process should take just a few minutes. Remember, you want the olive oil to be warm--not hot. High temperatures destroy the healthy properties in olive oil.


3. Put your rosemary into a bottle or jar that holds 1 pint. Remember that a little bit of rosemary goes a long way, so there is no need to stuff the bottle full of this herb.


4. Pour the warm olive oil into the bottle. Put the bottle aside to cool. Seal the bottle with a lid or a cork. Set the bottle in a dry, cool place with no direct sunlight for at least one week.


5. Decide whether you want to strain the rosemary out of the oil. Many people leave the rosemary leaves in the oil for a decorative touch. If you prefer to strain the olive oil, however, simply pour the oil through a strainer into a clean jar or bottle. You now have finished infusing olive oil with rosemary.


6. Enjoy your rosemary-infused olive oil. This oil is perfect for drizzling on salads and fresh bread. You can use the oil to flavor potatoes and pasta dishes. You can also try marinating chicken and fish in the oil for a little extra flavor.

Freeze Sweet Corn Without Blanching

Crisp, sweet corn freezes well without blanching.


Activated enzymes from picked or over-ripened corn begin to eat away at the flavor of the corn--even in the freezer. The blanching process halts the enzymes, saving the flavor of the corn. Freezing sweet corn without blanching however is okay because the enzymes will not have enough affect on this corns taste thanks to the abundant sugars. The trick, either way, for the best results is to freeze your corn as soon after picking as possible and to use it up within three months. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Harvest your sweet corn before it becomes too ripe.


2. Peel back the husks and remove.


3. Pull the silk from the corn and discard.


4. Place a small bowl upside-down inside of a larger bowl.


5. Stand a cob, small end down, on top of the small inverted bowl, and hold with one hand. The small bowl will keep the cob stable as you carefully cut the kernels off by slicing down along the cob with the other hand, using a knife. The large bowl will catch the kernels and you can transfer them into the freezer bags as needed.


6. Use a straw to suck all of the air from the filled bags. Seal tightly.


7. Mark the bags with the date and place in the freezer.

Tell A Young Gobbler From A Hen

A gobbler has a red beard.


Learning ferret out gobbler turkeys (males) from hens (females) is useful for people who work with animals on farms and specifically important for hunters. Young turkeys, known as jakes, are practically identical to their adult counterparts after eight weeks of age, except for the fact that the tail feathers on jakes are not all the same length, whereas they are on an adult turkey. Chicks look alike until they begin to mature, and once they mature, you will begin to notice differences. Once you've had a bit of practice, you'll be able to tell the difference between a young gobbler and a hen quite quickly and easily.


Instructions


1. Look at the head of the turkey. Hens typically have blue heads, which makes this the number one marker for telling the difference between the two. A gobbler will also have a white forehead and a hen will have a much paler face. These traits will begin to become apparent around eight weeks of age.


2. Examine the breast. A hen will have a rusty breast without a beard, while gobblers will often have a red beard. Gobbler's breasts are also more often black. A hen will usually have white or buff-tipped feathers, while a gobbler will have black-tipped feathers. These differences will begin to develop a little before the turkey hits the eight-week maturity mark.


3. Look at the turkey's feet. If the feet have spurs, or little pieces of skin on the back, they are gobblers. Spurs are about a half inch or longer on a mature turkey.


4. Note the size of the turkey. A female turkey is usually smaller than a male.


5. Watch as they develop. A hen will begin to develop smooth feathers around or a little bit before or after it turns eight weeks of age.

It can be hard living on a limited amount of money each week for your family. When there's a failing economy or a lack of jobs in your area, it can be hard trying to decide how your family will get by on a limited budget. While life may throw you some hardships that you will have to make it through, there are ways to be able to pay your expenses and get the necessities that you need for living. Read on to learn how you can get by on a limited income, and still enjoy life at the same time.


Instructions


1. Study the expenses of the entire household. Write down costs of utility bills, mortgage, rent, car payments, insurance, medical bills, and costs of food. Compare the bills with the income of the household. Make sure that there is enough income to pay the expenses. If there is not, make a list of the bills that are top priority such as house payments and utilities, and then food. Find other ways to bring in extra income for the household.


2. Look at the different kinds of services that your household subscribes to. Cancel or cut back on any other entertainment packages that you may have. For example, cut back on current cable subscriptions such as extra movie channels, and only subscribe to basic cable until your household can afford to upgrade. Cancel any extra phone or Internet services that you may have. Purchase phone cards or pay-as-you go cell phones to reduce phone expenses. Access the Internet from the library, or find cheaper Internet services if it is a necessity for school work or your business. Look into packages where you can subscribe to phone, Internet, and cable at a lower price.


3. Create a menu of the meals that your family plans on having for the week. Browse coupons and sale ads to find out where you can buy the best price ingredients and food that you need to create those meals. If there isn't a lot of money left in the household budget for food, contact your area food pantries, or find out how you can purchase food from Angel Food Ministries. Families can order boxes of food for only thirty dollars (see Resources).


4. Cut back on the amount of energy you use in your home. Set your thermostat around sixty eight degrees or at a temperature where your family can feel comfortable without overusing heat. Have extra blankets around, or wear sweaters in the winter. Use energy efficient light bulbs, and always turn off lights after leaving a room. Contact your local community action agency to learn more about the LIHEAP program. Liheap is a grant program that helps low income families pay their electric and gas bills (see Resources).


5. Shop at second hand stores for any clothing that your family may need. Be sure to check all of the garage sales in your area as well. Second hand clothing shops often carry great brand name or quality clothing at much lower prices.


6. Save every bit of change that your family gets in a jar. Place every penny, nickel, dime, or quarter that you get inside. This can be your "fun jar." When the jar has accumulated a lot of change, the family can use this to treat for dessert, dinner, a movie, or something that the family would like to have. While income may be low, you can still enjoy something fun and entertaining throughout life's hardships.

About Indian Food


Indian food is actually a collection of ethnic cuisines from the different regions of India. They mainly focus on spiced vegetables with rice or a flat bread called "naan." Meat is more common in cuisines from Muslim north India than Hindu south India. Many people like to eat Indian food at restaurants but are intimidated by the idea of cooking it at home. Understanding the ingredients traditionally in Indian cuisine may help to make it less challenging.


Spices and Fats


Spice is the backbone of Indian cuisine. Some common Indian spices include bay, cardamom, cinnamon, turmeric, chili powder, cloves, ginger and coriander. Spice blends such as curry and garam masala are also common. These are available as commercial blends or may be made from individual spices. In northern India, ghee or clarified butter is a common fat. In southern India, coconut oil is more likely to be used.


Vegetables


Vegetables are an important part of Indian cuisine. Many dishes are vegetarian. Onion and garlic are used often. Spinach, peas, tomato, chickpeas and potatoes are also used as the star ingredients in many dishes. These dishes are often served in spicy gravy-like sauces with rice or naan flat bread.


Meats


The most common meats in Indian cuisine are chicken and lamb. They are often served in tomato- or coconut-based sauces with vegetable dishes on the side. Shrimp is a common seafood in Indian cuisine. Pork and beef are not used in traditional Indian cuisine for religious reasons.

Train To Be A Chef

If you have a passion for cooking, becoming a chef may be the right career for you.


Let your passion for food transform into a career as a chef. Being a chef can be a rewarding and exciting experience but training to become one can be challenging. However, all your training pays off when the guest compliments you on another delicious dish. While education in the classroom is important, first hand exposure as an apprentice and assistant is the first step towards your culinary goals.

1. Choose a culinary education program. Some educational routes you can take include two- or four-year college degrees, vocational school programs, culinary school or an apprentice program offered by some culinary institutes. Some restaurants and hotels also offer internship training programs in their kitchens.


2. Prepare food through practice. No matter what culinary education route you take, spend lots of time preparing and cooking food. Through repetition and being in the kitchen you will learn first hand the skills and techniques that will make you a successful chef.


3. Learn and apply the curriculum. Learn the different cooking styles and techniques as well as care and maintain a clean kitchen. Knowledge of cooking utensils, portion sizes, meal-course planning and ingredient selection are just some of the many skills you will need to learn in order to run a kitchen and restaurant.


4. Know the different positions of the culinary hierarchy. Like many career paths, the road to becoming a chef will take time and experience. Knowing where to begin is important to becoming a head chef. A sauce chef who prepares sauces and stews can be a good starting place as well as an assistant cook. The more you know about the roles of each position the better you will understand get there.


5. Train as an apprentice or assistant to a head chef. Since hotels and restaurants generally have a head chef to direct a staff of cooks, most chefs are willing to take on an apprentice. After training as an apprentice, you may be promoted to a station cook and possibly a station chef.


6. Be able to handle pressure and stress on the job. A head chef's responsibility to provide the best quality food to his guest can put a lot of pressure on him and his staff. As part of the training staff, you will need to learn to make no mistakes under pressure and work with a sense of urgency to meet strict deadlines. If you are able to handle the pressure of the job, you will be ready to become a chef.

Millet Basics

Millet looks like couscous, but it is a grain rather than a pasta.


Millet is associated with birds because bird food is the primary form in which millet is sold in the United States. This tiny, ball-shaped grain is not just for the birds. Millet is a healthful addition to any human diet. Though small in size, millet is a nutritional powerhouse for people. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Origins


Millet is technically a large classification of cereal grasses that have origins in Africa or Asia, where millet remains a major food crop. According to "The Condensed Encyclopedia of Healing Foods," 90 percent of the worldwide millet crop is grown in three countries: Nigeria, India and China. The millet variety most commonly found in the West came from North Africa. It was a staple grain for the ancient peoples in the Middle East, Egypt and North Africa.


Nutrition


Compared to corn or wheat, millet is higher in protein. Like other grains, though, millet is not a complete protein that contains all the necessary amino acids for human nutrition. Millet also lacks vital nutrients, including calcium, vitamins A, D, B-12 and C. Vitamins and minerals millet does have include phosphorus, magnesium, thiamine, riboflavin and vitamin B-6.


Preparation


During cooking, millet expands to three to four times its original size. Rinsing millet before cooking washes away dirt and debris. Toasting millet before cooking gives the bland-tasting grain more flavor. Basic millet cooking requires boiling 3 to 4 cups of water or broth in a saucepan, adding 1 cup of rinsed millet to the boiling water, reducing the heat, covering the pot and simmering the millet for 18 to 22 minutes or until it is tender and absorbs the liquid.


Uses


Millet has many uses for humans besides fodder to fill bird feeders. In ancient Egypt, it was used as the grain to make beer and bread. It continues to be used that way in Africa. Whole millet can be ground into a flour for combining with wheat flour to boost the nutrition of bread. In the Bible, millet is one of the ingredients included in a grain combination for bread. That bread is still made and is known as Ezekiel bread, named for the book of the Bible from which it came. Options for millet's use include replacing rice with cooked millet for a similarly mild grain and serving millet as a substitute for oatmeal as a breakfast cereal.

Repel Squirrels Naturally

Too many squirrels can drive you absolutely nuts.


Squirrels are one of nature's most resourceful and cutest critters. Sometimes they can also be one of its greatest pests. Squirrels are inevitably drawn to birdfeeders and frequently find a way to empty them of their seeds. Squirrels also have a tendency to get into vegetable and flower gardens, devouring any morsels they can get their little paws on. Fortunately, you don't have to resort to violence to rid yourself of these hungry rodents. A natural repellent may prove just as effective. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Place 1 cup of crushed chili peppers into a large plastic container and add 1 gallon of water.


2. Attach the lid to the container and place it in a spot exposed to sunlight for approximately seven days. (See References 1)


3. Strain the mixture through cheesecloth to filter out larger chunks of pepper. Then pour the mixture into a plastic spray bottle.


4. Spray the pepper solution anywhere you're having squirrel problems. For example, if squirrels are invading your garden, spray the pepper water onto the plants and around the perimeter of the garden. If squirrels have infiltrated your attic, simply spray any entry points and even the floor or rafters.


5. Sprinkle dried and crushed cayenne peppers around trees or gardens for an added layer of defense.


6. Reapply repellent whenever it rains or every few weeks to keep squirrels away. (See References 2)

Cleaning Solution For Selfcleaning A Carpet

Make a homemade carpet cleaning solution to self-clean your carpet.


Carpet will get dirty over time. Dirt, dust and other debris are tracked onto the carpeting and leave unsightly spots. Whether you need to spot clean your carpet, or you want to clean the entire surface area, there is no need to call in a professional carpet cleaning service. You can make your own solution for self-cleaning your carpet with common household ingredients. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


Salt, Borax and Vinegar Carpet Cleaner


1. Pour equal parts vinegar, borax powder and salt into a bucket. Use a long-handled spoon to stir the ingredients until a paste forms.


2. Dip a scrub brush into the paste and scrub it onto the carpet. If you are cleaning a large area, use long-handled scrub brush so you don't have to bend down to scrub.


3. Let the paste sit on the carpet for about three hours. Vacuum up the dried paste.


Eucalyptus and Vinegar Carpet Cleaner


4. Pour 2 tsp. eucalyptus oil and 2 tsp. of glycerin into an empty spray bottle. Add 2 Tbsp. each of white vinegar, baking soda and denatured alcohol. Secure the lid on the bottle and shake it lightly.


5. Spray the mixture onto the entire carpet. Use a long-handled scrub brush to scrub the solution into the carpet.


6. Let the mixture dry for a few hours, then vacuum up the carpet to remove any residue.


Spot Cleaning Foam


7. Pour 1/4 cup of vegetable oil-based liquid soap into a large bowl. Add 3 tbsp. of warm water.


8. Mix the ingredients with an egg beater until a foam forms. Scrub the affected areas of the carpet with a scrub brush and the foam.


9. Rinse the carpet with a rag and plenty of water to remove any soap residue.

Low Carb Eating Tips

It is sometimes hard to give up carbs like these, but there are alternatives.


Low-carb diets have been developed because the body tends to store carbohydrate foods (sugars and starches) as fat. Carbohydrates are typically broken down into sugar by the body's digestive process, which ultimately gets stored as fat. Without sugar, the body is forced to burn body fat and insulin levels are stabilized, eliminating cravings and blood sugar swings. As grain and sugars have become part of today's lifestyle, it is not so easy to give up the carbs.


Cut Out All Refined Carbs


Following a low-carb diet means stop using alcohol, sugars or refined carbohydrates. Focus on grains with a low Glycemic Index. Refined carbs include most breakfast cereals, canned foods and prepared sauces.


Eating Habits


Adopt healthy eating habits when you are on a low-carb diet. Don't do any thing else while eating, like watching television or reading the paper. Eat slowly and savor every bite to prevent overeating. Eat the bulk of your food early in the day, to give your body the opportunity to burn the calories it consumes. Never skip breakfast, as this important meal stabilizes your blood sugar. If you are not hungry early in the morning, start with a protein shake. Avoid quick and easy junk food for lunch, but take your own food with you.


Eat Protein


Eat protein with every single meal. Protein is more satisfying than carbs and requires more energy to break down. As your body recognizes protein as something you need, the brain will signal that you have had enough food sooner than when eating carbohydrates.


Leftovers


Be creative with last-night's leftovers for lunch. This is a cheap and delicious way to replace the typical high-carb sandwich lunch. Mix and match the leftovers with several low-carb sauces. Create a chicken salad with last night's leftover chicken, and you will feel full for the rest of the day.


Pasta


Replace regular pasta with pasta that is made from vegetables, such as kelp/seaweed pasta or mushroom pasta. Or use spaghetti squash or stringed zucchini.


Smoothies


Use coconut milk, kefir or yogurt for smoothies and add low-sugar fruit such as berries instead of bananas or pineapples, which have high glucose content.


Coconut Flour


Use coconut flour to bake waffles, pancakes or muffins. Coconut flour is low in carbohydrates, and this way you don't need to give up your favorite foods altogether. Use low-sugar fruit for sweet toppings.


Carb Withdrawal


In the first three to four days of your low-carb diet, you will be prone to carb withdrawal. Symptoms like fatigue, headaches, irritability and cravings for sweets and a hungry feeling are typical withdrawal symptoms. Drink a lot of water and eat meat, cheese or eggs whenever you feel hungry. Take 1000mg of L-Glutamine to reduce carb cravings.


Water


Drink at least eight glasses of water daily. Water will flush out your kidneys and remove toxins from your body.


Sweets


Sweet cravings are a serious problem for people on low-carb diets. Eat extra fat such as extra butter, coconut oil or add raw cream to your hot tea or coffee to make the carb cravings disappear.


Snacks


Eat protein rich snacks like hard-boiled eggs, slices of hard cheese or nuts. Choose snack foods you actually enjoy to eat.

Chicken broth can be used for a variety of quick soups.


Chicken broth is used in many recipes, either as a primary ingredient or as a convenient flavoring. With chicken broth on hand, a cook can quickly conjure up any number of soups, sauces or tasty pilafs with a minimum of fuss and bother. Homemade chicken broth or stock is always the gold standard, but even cooks who routinely make their own can benefit from buying some commercially prepared broth to have on hand as backup. Instructions


1. Taste several brands of chicken broth, giving careful consideration to the flavors. Weed out those that are overly salty, or have chemical aftertastes. Pay attention to nuances of flavor, such as the presence of garlic or herbs in the broth.


2. Consider the feeling of the broth in your mouth. Ask yourself if it gives a sense of richness and fullness, or is it thin and watery? The best chicken broths have naturally occurring gelatin, which contributes body to your soup.


3. Pour the broths you are comparing into measuring cups or tumblers, and compare them visually. Some broths have the crystal clarity you'd find in a top restaurant, while others are cloudier or show signs of artificial coloring.


4. Read the label, and compare the ingredients. Some broths are made entirely with natural ingredients, while others have a multitude of additives and preservatives.


5. Compare the nutritional values on the label. They can vary widely, depending how the broth is made. Sodium content is an especially major variable, with inexpensive and poorly made brands relying heavily on salt to provide their flavor.

Make Sprouted Wheat Bread In A Bread Machine

Sprouted wheat bread can keep you satisfied longer.


If you want to serve your family more nutritious meals, adding freshly made, sprouted wheat bread straight from your bread machine is a healthy starting point. Sprouted grains retain more of their nutrients than processed grains. Some of the nutrients found in sprouted-grain bread include fiber, vegetable proteins, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The complex carbohydrates in a piece of sprouted wheat bread also help to keep blood-sugar levels steady for a longer time and keep you feeling satisfied longer. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Place 1 cup of wheat berries in a quart-sized glass jar. Cover the wheat berries with room-temperature water. Secure the gauze over the top of the jar with a large rubber band. Put the jar with the berries in a dark place, and let them soak for approximately four hours.


2. Hold the jar of berries over the sink and turn the jar upside down, so that the water will drain. Turn the jar onto its side to distribute the berries evenly along the side facing down.


3. Cover the berries with water again as in Step 1, drain them over the sink after two minutes and redistribute them as in Step 2. Repeat this procedure about every six hours. Check the berries after 24 hours. They should now have tiny sprouts.


4. Eat one or two of the sprouts to make sure they're ready for the bread. They should be tender and crisp, not hard or mushy.


5. Place the sprouts in a food processor and use the "Pulse" setting until they are coarsely ground. Fill 1 cup with sprouts and then add water to the cup until it reaches the top. Measure another ½ cup of water into the bread machine's fully assembled pan.


6. Measure the rest of the ingredients into the machine following the manufacturer's guidelines. Choose the appropriate cycle to cook the bread and start the machine.

1. Plan out your grocery trips. Know what food you're getting in advance and compile a list so you won't forget. This will prevent you from purchasing something because it looks good and not because its cheap and healthy. In addition, this helps you form a general food budget.


2. Keep dishes simple to stay in your budget. Fixings for food like salad, sandwiches and pasta are inexpensive and healthy, as long as you don't consume them in huge quantities. Generally, the more complicated your menu, the more ingredients you'll need.


3. Buy produce that can be used for more than one meal. One package of tomatoes can be used in a salad, on a sandwich and with spaghetti. By buying produce that has more than one use, you prevent waste and give yourself more options.


4. Budget for your snack food. Keeping trail mix, carrot sticks or yogurt in your fridge will keep you away from more expensive, unhealthy foods.


5. Make your own simple dressing and sauces. Olive oil, lemon juice, herbs and garlic tossed with pasta makes for a tasty, inexpensive gourmet meal. Look for similar alternatives.


6. Limit your intake of alcohol and fast food. Eating at home more often and preparing the meals yourself results in eating less salt, trans fat, calories and preservatives. It also costs much less.

Cover your head with a warm towel or a shower cap and leave it in for 45 minutes. Rinse well with lukewarm water, as you don't want to cause the egg to harden. Perform a final rinse with apple cider vinegar to give your hair added shine. The vinegar also helps clean the hair shafts of any egg or olive oil that wasn't completely removed.

Mascarpone Cheese Alternatives

Mascarpone is a common ingredient in tiramisu.


Mascarpone is a luxuriously rich cheese made from cow's milk. It does not have the firm texture you might associate with cheese; you cannot cut slices of it or grate it over pasta. Instead, it's very soft texture resembles a stickier version of sour cream more than a Parmesan or mozzarella. Mascarpone's creamy, buttery flavor works well both in desserts such as tiramisu, a common Italian dessert, and in savory dishes. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Cream Cheese


Replacing mascarpone in a recipe can be as simple as substituting an equal amount of cream cheese for the mascarpone. This works best in recipes where the texture of the cheese is relatively unimportant, since cream cheese is firmer than mascarpone. To achieve a more similar texture, allow the cream cheese to warm to room temperature and then whip it in a food processor or by hand until it is softer.


Cream Cheese and Heavy Whipping Cream


Mixing cream cheese with heavy whipping cream will give you a texture similar to mascarpone. Allow the cream cheese to come to room temperature, then mix it with cream at a rate of 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream per 8 oz. of cream cheese. Whip the mixture in a food processor or by hand until it reaches a consistently smooth texture, then use the mixture in place of mascarpone.


Ricotta


Ricotta works well as a substitute for mascarpone thanks to its soft texture. Ricotta does not have the same sticky creaminess as mascarpone, however, but it is similarly moist. If you go this route, use plain ricotta -- the type you might purchase to add to a lasagna. Ricotta salata is a solid version of the cheese that has a saltier flavor and does not work as well in place of mascarpone.


Ricotta and Heavy Whipping Cream


Because ricotta is somewhat crumblier and less sticky and rich than mascarpone, adding heavy whipping cream can make it a convincing substitute. Place the ricotta in a food processor or large bowl and add heavy whipping cream at a rate of ½ cup of cream per 8 oz. of ricotta. Whip the mixture until it reaches a consistently smooth texture, then use in place of mascarpone.

Test An Organic Compound For Purity

To test an organic compound for purity, you need to determine its melting point.


Organic compounds are natural products that contain carbon and hydrogen. They include carbohydrates (sugar, plants), proteins (fats, waxes, steroids), lipids and nucleic acids. You will often find organic compounds in the form of mixtures, so you must assess their purity before using them. Too many impurities can lead to explosions or fires. Impurities in medical substances can injure or kill a patient.


One of the easiest ways to test an organic compound for purity is to find the melting point of a similar pure substance, then warm your sample and compare the melting points of both substances.


Instructions


1. Obtain a table of organic compounds' melting points. Clean a glass capillary tube with a neutral detergent. Dry it. Use a mortar and pestle to reduce your sample to powder.


2. Put the powder inside the capillary tube. Pack the powder homogeneously. Put a high-accuracy thermometer that sustains heat inside the pan.


3. Put the tube in a pan full of warm water. Heat the water to a few degrees below the expected melting point.


4. Look at your sample carefully and record the temperature on the thermometer when you see the sample melting.

Can An Llc Be Publicly Traded

Entrepreneurs in the United States can organize their businesses according to various structures, such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations and limited liability companies. Limited liability companies, like corporations, sometimes can allow their owners to buy and sell partial ownership in the company on the public market. However, some differences exist between the ways in which these two business structures go about such management of ownership.


Stocks


A company uses stocks as an investment instrument to represent a certain amount of ownership. It distributes these shares of stock among various investors according to what they have put into the company, whether as cash or some other type of investment. If the company is publicly traded, stock owners can sell their shares on the public stock market. In the United States, only corporations - C Corps and S Corps - can represent company ownership in the form of stock. While limited liability companies are not corporations, and therefore have no stock, they can find ways around this barrier to allow public trading.


Units


When limited liability companies divide up ownership, they do so according to a percentage that they establish in the company's operating agreement or according to a certain number of units. These units function in a manner similar to how corporate stocks function, and if the operating agreement allows it, the owners of these units may publicly trade them on the stock market as if they were stocks. While such publicly traded limited liability companies do exist, they are much less common than publicly traded corporations.


Public Trading Stipulations


One special aspect of limited liability companies is that they can opt for the Internal Revenue Service to view them as sole proprietorships, partnerships or corporations for tax purposes. For a limited liability company to allow its owners to publicly trade units of ownership, it must opt for the Internal Revenue Service to tax it as a partnership. While publicly traded limited liability companies are similar to publicly traded corporations in various ways, they are not the same. For instance, corporations must pay corporate income tax before making distributions to shareholders. After receiving their distributions, shareholders pay personal income tax as well. Limited liability companies, on the other hand, are pass-through entities, which means that they do not pay any income taxes on the company level, leaving tax payment up to the unit holders themselves.


Legal Limitations


Since the strict definitions of specific business structures vary from one state to another, some states may not allow limited liability companies to publicly trade their units of ownership. This disparity between states is partially because the idea of having a publicly traded limited liability company is fairly new. If you intend to start a limited liability company and trade its units publicly, first investigate the legal requirements of doing so specific to your state.

Supply and demand is one economic factor that changes the price of food over time.


When walking down the supermarket aisle, it's impossible to overlook the ever-changing price of food. According to the Food Timeline, in 1970, an 18 oz. box of corn flakes cost 38 cents. By 1990, that same box cost $1.99 on average. The entire landscape of food economics changed greatly throughout the eras, moving away from the agricultural economy of the 1930s to the technological, consumer-driven market. Besides this transformation, there are a number of other factors that impact food economics.


Production and Supply


As technological improvements came to farms, the owners produced more food and transported it to market more effectively. However, fast production does not always mean better prices. The commercial market is fierce, and the cost of maintaining farms significant. To offset this, some countries like the United States provide farm subsidies in order to stabilize farm production and the food market. Additionally, research continues searching for ways to improve food yields in the face of an ever-growing population.


Consumer Demand


The tastes of people around the world change from era to era, particularly when exposed to new cultures or ideas. For example, in the 1980s America began embracing sushi and other Asian-fusion foods. According to Food & Wine Magazine, from 1988-1998 the number of sushi bars quintupled in the United States. Similarly, with the focus on healthy eating, as of 2010 the market for organic foods grew to $14 billion.


Global Warming


When weather damages crops, the cost of that loss increases the prices consumers pay. Scientists study the issue of global warming for it's inevitable long-term effect on food economics. Dramatic climate changes impact yields, and therefore the food supply. To offset this, farms started investing in technological measures that help minimize loss. This additional cost for upgrades also figures into the final price of food.


Preparation Time


Time is money. Another economic factor affecting food lies in the hands of the home cook. In determining selection, many cooks consider how much time it takes to locate and prepare specific items. This particular tendency made fast food and instant mixes increasingly popular, especially in homes where two people work outside the house.

Use Ice Bins To Organize Your Kitchen

Ice bins offer convenient compartments for small-item storage.


Ice bins are perfect little storage containers for small-item organization. These inexpensive plastic bins will fit in most kitchen drawers and can be stacked for even more storage. Ice trays are sold in a variety of sizes, and some have much larger divided sections, giving you more room for small items you have in quantity. Using the bins is straightforward. Instructions


1. Place newspaper on the table or counter and open your junk drawer. Dump the contents onto the newspaper. Clean out the bottom of the drawer and install shelf paper. Take several ice bins and arrange them in the drawer to understand how they fit.


2. Place the ice bins back onto the counter near your pile. Sort out the trash in the drawer first; trash is any item too old, broken or otherwise of a type you will never use. Sort remaining items directly into your bins. Save screws, nuts, paper clips, rubber bands, twist ties, thumbtacks, magnets, bag clips, corn-cob forks, tape and other items. Keep like items together.


3. Place your sorted bins back in the junk drawer.


4. Use ice bins to organize your baking decorations and spices. Use small plastic bags and label the bag with the contents. Tie the bag with a twist tie and place the small bag in its own compartment for easy access. This will allow you to keep food coloring, sprinkles, small candles, sugar decorations and sugar-frosting tubes all in one area. The same trick works for small amounts of spices.

Garlic Water For Plants

Garlic is a natural insect repellent.


Garlic water, sometimes referred to as "garlic tea," is commonly used as a pesticide, especially in organic gardening, because it is effective, all-natural and safe to use on all plants. Simply planting garlic near other plants helps prevent insect infestations, but this is not always practical, especially if you are trying to protect larger plants like shrubs and trees. Benefits


Like other strongly scented aromatics, garlic naturally repels pests but this is not limited to insects. Garlic is potent enough to repel other creatures that would otherwise gnaw and destroy your plants including cats, dogs, rabbits, squirrels and other woodland animals. Garlic water variations include hot chili peppers, which work even better to repel larger creatures and may even kill insect pests, and dish soap, which helps the garlic water adhere to the plants.


Recipes


The most basic recipe for garlic water is simply garlic and water. Break up two bulbs of garlic into a blender and cover with about 5 cups of water. Blend until pureed, let sit for two days, then strain out the solids. Pour the solution into a 1-gallon jug and fill the jug the rest of the way with water. There are variations that call for adding whole hot peppers, like jalapeños and serranos, which boost the garlic water's potency. Some recipes also call for the addition of 1 teaspoon of pure soap, like Ivory, which has a minimum of chemical additives. If you are adding soap, wait until after you have strained out the solids.


Storage


A batch of garlic water will last for up to one month if properly stored. Keep your garlic water concentrate in a 1-gallon-sized container with a loose fitting lid. Your garlic water will last longer if you keep it in the refrigerator but, failing that, a cool, dark place like a garage, garden storage shed or basement will suffice.


Application


Depending on the size of the plant you are planning to spray, you will need either a common spray bottle or a high-powered garden sprayer. Spray bottles are great for smaller plants in flower and vegetable gardens. If you are spraying anything large from shrubs to trees, use a garden sprayer. Mix 1/4 cup of the garlic water concentrate with 1 gallon of water and fill your spray bottle or garden sprayer. Completely coat the plants with the garlic water once every one to two weeks throughout the spring and summer months. Reapply after any rainfall.

Make Oldtime Jerky Without A Dehydrator

Turning beef into beef jerky only takes a couple of hours.


Beef jerky is a delicious treat that you can enjoy anywhere. You can eat it at home as a snack, or enjoy it while camping or having a picnic. Although you can buy it at the store, it often come with lots of preservatives. Making it at home will give you jerky that is fresher, seasoned just the way that you like it and without many of the added preservatives. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Visit the market and buy a beef flank steak. Look for red, lean meat with little fat. Buy a beef jerky cure and seasoning such as salt, pepper and cayenne pepper as well.


2. Prepare the meat. With a knife and a cutting board, cut the meat into half, and then cut the meat again lengthwise with the grain to make 1-inch strips. Read the package of the seasoning and check how much must be poured for each pound of beef. Sprinkle the seasoning onto the meat, and massage it into the meat with your hands. Add any additional seasonings to your taste.


3. Take a large, zip-sealed bag and put the seasoned beef meat inside. Seal it. Put it in the refrigerator and let it stay there overnight so that the meat will marinate.


4. Cook the beef jerky. Put skewer sticks through the meat strips and set the oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook the beef jerky for at least 80 minutes. Place a casserole dish beneath the strips of meat to catch the dripping fat.


5. Put the cooked beef jerky in another fresh zip-sealed bag while it is hot and let it stay there for at least an hour. This will enhance the flavor of the meat. Serve it after an hour.

Make Gummi Worms

Instructions


1. Add both the flavored gelatin and the unflavored gelatin to a small saucepan and mix them together.


2. Pour the water over the gelatin mixture and stir until a thick ball forms. If you would like a darker color gummi worm then what the flavored gelatin provides, you can add four to five drops of food coloring at the same time you add the water.


3. Place the saucepan onto the stove and heat on medium until the gelatin ball has melted. Stir continuously and be sure to break up any chunks of gelatin form.


4. Pour the hot liquid into a worm-shaped candy mold and place into the freezer to cool for at least 10 minutes.


5. Remove the mold from the freezer and turn it upside down to pop out the gummi worms. Store the gummi worms in the refrigerator in zipper storage bags.

2. Find out if there are any baby boutiques in your area. If the store has a website, check out what types of clothing they have for sale and whether they sell baby clothing made from organic materials. If the store does not have a website, give the shop owner a call and ask if they sell organic baby clothing.

Use Brown Rice Flour

Unhulled, ground brown rice forms brown rice flour.


Brown rice flour, which contains healthy bran, will add a darker color to your baked goods. It also imparts a richer, nuttier flavor than wheat flour. Those who are on a gluten-free diet can experiment with combining brown rice flour and other alternative flours to replace wheat flour in recipes for baked goods. Brown rice flour also functions as a thickener for sauces and roux. Cooks also use it as the base of a breading or dredge for foods like chicken tenders or fish fillets. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Swap out up to 1/5 of the total amount of wheat flour for brown rice flour in your recipe. Using more than this can cause the finished product to be excessively crumbly. If you wish to swap out all of your wheat flour, combine brown rice flour with other alternative flours, such as barley, soy or potato flour.


2. Measure out 3/4 cup of brown rice flour for each 1 cup of wheat flour you are replacing.


3. Add 2 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder for each cup of brown rice flour you use. This helps compensate for the different properties of the flours, and it will add leavening.


4. Mix your dough or batter slightly longer than called for in your recipe. Wheat flour absorbs less liquid than brown rice flour. If your dough or batter does not form together well after mixing, try adding about 1 tablespoon more liquid, such as milk, and continue mixing.

Get Chili Soup Out Of A Carpet

Eating a warm bowl of chili on a cold winter day provides warmth and comfort until it lands on your carpet. An orange-brown chili carpet stain may look devastating, but you can remove it from the carpet if you act quickly. Chili contains a variety of ingredients, but the main ingredient consists of tomato sauce. Treat the chili stain as a tomato-based stain to remove the dark stain from the carpet successfully. Instructions


1. Remove the chili ingredients from the carpet by picking them up with a paper towel. Scrape the surface with a dull butter knife carefully to remove any dried soup.


2. Blot the carpet surface with paper towels to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Do not press hard or rub on the carpet because you can spread the stain.


3. Combine 1 tablespoon of liquid dish detergent with 2 cups of water in a bowl. Blot the chili stain with a sponge soaked in the soapy water until the stain vanishes.


4. Remove lingering chili stains with rubbing alcohol. Dampen a clean washcloth with rubbing alcohol and blot the surface until you remove as much of the chili stain as possible.


5. Treat tough chili stains with 1 tablespoon of ammonia mixed with 1/2 cup of cool water. Dampen a sponge with the mixture and blot it onto the surface until you absorb all of the tomato stain.


6. Soak a clean sponge in water. Wring out the excess water and blot the carpet to rinse it thoroughly. Blot the carpet with a dry washcloth and place a fan next to the area to dry it quickly.

Desert Food Chain With Plants & Animals

The desert ecosystem contains more life than meets the eye.


The desert may seem like a barren landscape, with little life and even less activity. But further investigation of the ecosystem will reveal a vibrant food chain with a variety of adaptations that allow for life in these harsh conditions.


The Food Chain


The food chain in any ecosystem is more like a food web. Plants and animals all need energy to survive. They obtain this energy through food. All organisms are designed to consume certain kinds of food. We can divide these organisms into three categories: plants, herbivores and carnivores.


Plants


Plants are the first organisms in the environment to produce energy and are referred to as primary producers. They attain energy from sunlight and convert it into carbohydrates that are used for growth and maintenance. This process is called photosynthesis. Plants are the most abundant food source in any ecosystem. Because their energy is needed to support not only the animals that consume them directly, but also the animals at the top of the food chain, they must contain an abundant supply of energy in the form of carbohydrates.


In a desert ecosystem primary producers have ample sunlight to use for energy, however, water resources are often scarce and reduces the rate of photosynthesis. This limits their ability to grow and reproduce. For this reason, desert ecosystems contain less abundant plant life than more fertile ecosystems such as rain forests.


Herbivores


Herbivores are animals that consume plants. The energy they gain from the plants they consume is much less than the amount of energy originally acquired by the plant. Between 15 and 70 percent of the energy attained through sunlight is used for plant maintenance and respiration. The remaining energy is all that is left for herbivores to use.


Due to the scarce plant supply, desert ecosystems cannot support a large population of herbivores. Desert land is the least productive in terms of plant growth and animals that rely on plants for survival are smaller than in ecosystems with more resources. Rodents are very common in the desert ecosystem. Their smaller bodies require less food resources to support.


Carnivores


Animals that prey on rodents and other herbivores are the third category in the food web. These animals are called carnivores and gain an even smaller amount of the energy that was originally introduced into the ecosystem through photosynthesis. The animal that is consumed contains hair, bones and other indigestible material that is of no use to the carnivore. On average, the consumption of another animal provides a carnivore with 5 to 20 percent of the energy of that animal. Carnivores in a desert ecosystem include foxes, snakes and birds of prey.


Adaptations


Organisms must adapt to survive in a habitat as harsh as the desert, where water is scarce and the daytime temperatures are high. Plants adapt by increasing their rate of production per unit of water. Production of carbohydrates by plants in habitats with limited water availability will increase by 0.4 g of mass per kilogram of water.


Animals have adapted to the hot temperatures and low water availability in several ways, including nocturnal behavior. In addition to smaller animals dominating the landscape, carnivores in desert ecosystems require less water on average than those in other environments. When low on water, animals like coyotes or foxes will consume more food, retaining what water resources may be contained in them and using specially adapted low metabolic rates to prevent further water loss from the extra digestion.

Instructions


1. Locate a good source for whole grains for home milling. Look for whole grains at health and natural food stores, food co-ops and online. Contact your local natural bread store or bakery and ask if they mill their own flour. If so, you may be able to buy grain in bulk through their source.


2. Find out if Bread Beckers, Frankferd Farms, Quail Cove Farms, Wheat Montana or other natural food sources have co-ops or deliveries in your area. If so, find out become a customer and plan to place an order for whole grains for home milling.


3. Determine which types of whole grains best suit your needs. If you like to bake heavy wheat loaves, try hard red wheat. For lighter loaves, buy white wheat, which is a whole grain with a lighter texture and flavor. If you want to try making sourdough bread, look for rye. To make Irish oatmeal, buy whole oats and coarsely grind, or crack, them to make porridge.


4. Order a large quantity of whole grains at a time. Buying in bulk (usually 45 lbs. and up) saves money and gives you a great value. Be sure that you have buckets with tightly sealing lids to avoid attracting pests. Often, you will be able to purchase the buckets from the grain supplier.


5. Experiment with milling at different textures--very fine for pastries, course for cereals--after locating and purchasing whole grains for home milling.

Become a Farmer


Farming is a noble occupation but is not for the faint of heart. It requires hard physical labor. And yet those who farm would not do anything else for all the money in the world. That's why many farms are handed down from one generation to the next. It's a call of nature as old as time and is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world.


Instructions


1. Learn options available for the different types of agriculture. Many farmers today hold college degrees in agriculture, and some hold advanced degrees. While a college degree is not required, a farmer must be committed to staying current with new trends in agriculture.


2. Buy or rent land. Whether the farmer owns the land, has a mortgage on the land or leases the land, it is an expensive operational cost.


3. Buy or lease equipment. If the focus of the farming operation is grain, there can easily be hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in equipment. Even if the farmer leases the equipment, it is still a major expense. If the farming operation focuses around livestock, there is still equipment to buy or lease to produce food for the animals.


4. Finance the farm operation. A farmer must have cash flow in order to buy the food, seeds, equipment and other materials that he needs as well as the basics for his family.
