Fasting can be an effective way to cleanse your body of toxins. It's an attractive remedy for people with joint pain, insomnia or excessive weight. However, it's important to know your own body's limitations. By taking a few precautions and consulting with your doctor, you can make sure that you will avoid complications while fasting. Follow these steps to find out how.

Find Out If Fasting Is Right for You


1. Consult with your doctor before beginning any fast. Some medical conditions like diabetes and hypoglycemia can create complications while fasting.


2. Experiment by taking several short fasts before embarking on a longer one to see if your body reacts accordingly. A short fast would last 24 hours. A long fast will generally extend for more than 10 days.

4. Exercise consistently while fasting. The activity will help circulate your blood. Remember to never overexert yourself.


5. Drink at least 7 to 10 glasses, each 8 oz., of water per day. Your body's need for water will increase without food.


6. Consider whether or not you should take a multi-vitamin while fasting. Keep in mind that some multi-vitamins can actually increase hunger pangs, dizziness and nausea.


7. Rest whenever you feel tired or run-down. Nap if and when you need to.


8. Get plenty of fresh air and sunshine during your fast. The body can absorb energy and vitamins from sunlight and the environment. Remember to wear your sunscreen!


End Your Fast the Correct Way


9. Avoid having a large feast for your first meal after a fast. The foods during your first meal should have a laxative effect to remove all of the mucus and toxins that have accumulated during the fast. Many people recommend drinking only watered down fruit juices and thin vegetable broth in the days after a fast is concluded.


10. Wait for a few hours after your first meal to see if you experience any discomfort before eating more food.

What Is The Difference Between Mangosteen And Organic Mangosteen Juice

Mangosteen trees originated in Southeast Asia.


Mangosteen trees are common in tropical areas of the world, and the mangosteen fruit has many health benefits. To be considered organic, a fruit juice product must contain a certain amount of fruit from an organically certified grower and farm. Generally, mangosteen juice contains other fruit and, therefore, the mangosteen ingredient specifically may not be organic. The Mangosteen Fruit


St. Johns wort is in the Clusiaceae (formerly Guttiferae) family along with mangosteen.


Found in tropical areas, the slow-growing mangosteen tree ranges in height from 3 to 80 feet. The fruit looks similar to a pomegranate, but the interior resembles a segmented citrus fruit. When ripe, the fruit is generally dark purple, round and has a thick inedible rind that can only be consumed if processed correctly. The edible flesh within the hard rind is white and sweet with segments containing one or two seeds each. Mangosteen juice is produced using all the parts of the fruit.


Benefits of Mangosteen Fruit Juice


Mangosteen juice is most often found in the health food section of grocery stores.


To make mangosteen juice, the rind, seed and flesh are blended together. Lauded for its health benefits, the rind was historically used in Southeast Asia as a topical treatment for skin infections. The flesh was ingested to relieve stomach cramping, dysentery and diarrhea. There is little confirmed scientific research to date on the specific benefits of mangosteen juice. The rind contains xanthones, a naturally occurring chemical currently being studied for its cancer-fighting properties.


Organic Certification for Mangosteen Juice


While a number of authoritative bodies grant "organic certification" to food, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) controls the certification for the most widely circulated products in the United States To be labeled organic, a product must contain at least 95 percent organic ingredients. If a product contains less than this, the label may identify which ingredients are organic. Because mangosteen juice is often blended with several fruit juices, check the bottle's label to confirm that mangosteen is one of the organic ingredients.


Organic Mangosteen Juice versus Mangosteen Juice


The difference between organic mangosteen juice and nonorganic mangosteen juice is the origin of the ingredients. If 95 percent of the ingredients (excluding water and salt) are certified organic products, then the mangosteen juice is organic. Often organic products cost more due to the nature of their production, so organic mangosteen juice may be more expensive than nonorganic juice. Because taste is a subjective sense, it's impossible to say whether organic mangosteen juice tastes better than nonorganic juice. Roast A 12 Pound Turkey

Roast turkey is a healthy main dish.


Whether it's for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or just because, a roast turkey provides the basis of a delicious, satisfying meal. A 12-lb turkey is a mid-sized turkey that won't be hard to handle and doesn't require many hours to roast. Depending on the size of your guests' appetites, a 12-lb. turkey should feet approximately 12 people. Don't be concerned about leftovers, as leftover turkey almost never goes to waste. Even small pieces can be used to make soup or sandwiches. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Thaw a frozen turkey using a safe method. The turkey, including the packaging, can be thawed on a tray in the refrigerator. Although thawing the turkey in the refrigerator is safest, a turkey can also be thawed in a sink or basin filled with cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes. If the original packaging isn't airtight, place the bag in a plastic bag. A 12-lb. turkey will require about 3 days to thaw in the refrigerator and approximately 6 hours in cold water. Turkeys can also be thawed in a microwave oven. Refer to your microwave oven manual for information about thawing your turkey in the microwave.


2. Remove the thawed turkey from the packaging, then pull the giblets out of the neck cavity.


3. Place the turkey in a flat rack in a sturdy roasting pan. The pan should be about 2 1/2 inches deep. Brush the turkey with cooking oil to keep the skin moist and golden brown.


4. Poke a meat thermometer into the meatiest part of the thigh, but avoid placing the thermometer against a bone.


5. Place the roasting pan in an oven preheated to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooking the turkey at lower temperatures is unsafe, as the temperature won't be hot enough to kill bacteria.


6. Cover the turkey breast loosely with a piece of aluminum foil when the skin begins to turn golden. Foil will prevent the breast from overcooking.


7. Cook the turkey until the meat thermometer registers at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit in the meaty part of the thigh. A 12-lb. turkey should cook in 3 to 3 1/2 hours.


8. Remove the roasted turkey from the oven. Allow the turkey to cool for 15 to 20 minutes before carving the meat.

Crab cakes are one of the most beloved appetizers of all time. Recipes may vary, but certain ingredients are a must. The crab cake may have been born in Maryland, but all of America loves it. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Basics


The crab cake is an appetizer that originates from the state of Maryland. The "cake," or croquette, is made up of various components--the most important being crab meat. Not all crab cake recipes are the same, but they generally contain crab meat, breadcrumbs, seasonings, egg and milk. Once combined, those ingredients are packed together in small or bite-sized discs that are then cooked. The traditional Maryland crab cake contains blue crab from the Chesapeake Bay, but other types of crab, such as Dungeness crab, can be used. Maryland restaurants tend to serve two types of crab cakes: Boardwalk and Restaurant. The two differ in that the Restaurant or gourmet crab cakes only contain crab and no fillers, while the Boardwalk cake contains the normal components and is breaded and fried.


Components of a Crab Cake


Large chunk crab meat is generally preferred and the higher the quality, the better the crab cake. Canned crab meat can be used as an alternative. Egg is the binder in many foods, and it is for crab cakes as well. The egg helps hold all the ingredients together so that a cake can be shaped and stay in that shape. The starch is the next component; this is typically bread or bread crumbs, but other foods such as flour, potatoes or crackers can be used. While the egg can be considered as a moistening agent, another ingredient is usually added as well. This could be milk, cream, broth or mayonnaise. The final component of the cake is the seasoning. These can vary greatly, but some that are commonly used are onion, garlic, parsley, mustard and salt.


Making the Crab Cake


The cakes are formed into circles or discs about the size of a small cookie and half an inch thick, but they can be as large as a hamburger. They are usually coated in bread crumbs or flour to add more crunch and to protect the cake as it cooks. The cakes should be chilled thoroughly before cooking to help ensure they retain their shape and are flavored evenly. Pan-frying, grilling and baking are all ways to cook the cake. The larger cakes are sometimes served on a bun as a sandwich.


Nutrition


Different recipes contain different amounts of ingredients, which will affect calorie and fat amounts. Fried cakes will have more fat, calories and carbohydrates than grilled or baked cakes. The type of moistener used will affect nutrition as well. A grilled crab cake using crackers, lemon juice and mustard contains about 25 grams of protein, 9 grams of fat and 225 calories.


Theory


The idea for these crab cakes is thought to come from families trying to stretch their seafood to make it last longer by adding extra ingredients to their mixture. Scallops, lobster and even chunks of fish can be used in cakes as well.

Ornamental Grasses In Southern California

Choose salt-tolerant grasses for coastal gardening.


Much of Southern California falls into zones 9a through 9b on the U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone map. Average annual low temperatures in this region fall to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. If you want to plant ornamental grasses in your Southern California landscape, choose species hardy to your zone. Before choosing grasses, determine your garden's specific soil, moisture and sunlight conditions. Does this Spark an idea?


For Coastal Areas


Gardens near the Pacific Ocean may have saline soil due to salt spray. Salt can also build up on plant foliage, causing damage. The gulf muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaries) tolerates heat, salt and drought, making it a good choice for coastal gardens. Hardy in zones 6 to 9, this 3-foot-tall grass produces pink, purple, red to gray inflorescences and has lustrous green foliage. Plant in sun to light shade and well-drained to sandy soil.


Heavy Metal blue switch grass (Panicum virgatum "Heavy Metal") also tolerates salt and drought. This upright grass grows to 5 feet tall and has silver-blue, sturdy foliage. Heavy Metal blue switch grass is hardy in zones 4 to 9 and prefers full sun exposures.


Shade-Tolerant


Southern California is famous for its sunshine, but every garden has its shady spots. Choose shade-tolerant grasses for sites that don't have full sun exposure. Fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides) is hardy in zones 5 to 9. This grass grows from 2 to 4 feet tall in an upright, open mounded shape. From midsummer through autumn, fountain grasses produce a purple to white inflorescence atop a tall stem. Plant in sun to partial shade in well-drained, rich soil.


The compact white-striped bamboo (Pleiodlastus variegates) is hardy in zones 5 to 9. This spreading bamboo can be used as a ground cover or planted in containers. It grows from 8 to 24 inches tall and has attractive, white-striped foliage. Plant this drought-tolerant bamboo in sun to partial shade.


For Moist Sites


Many grasses need well-drained soils to thrive, but some tolerate or even prefer wetter sites. Job's tears (Coix lacryma-jobi) grows as an annual in zone 9. This bright green, lush grass produces gray to black seeds on tall stems and grows from 3 to 4 feet tall. Plant in sun to partial shade and moist to wet soil.


The tiny Japanese sweet flag (Acorus gramineus) only grows between 6 and 12 inches tall. Hardy in zones 7 to 9, Japanese sweet flag prefers partial shade to sun and moist or even damp soil. This grass has aromatic, shiny foliage.


Adaptable Grasses


Some grasses thrive in a variety of conditions. Feather reed grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora) is hardy in zones 4 to 9 and prefers sites in sun to light shade. This grass tolerates clay, heavy, dry and wet soils. Feather reed grass has thin, bright green foliage and produces feathery purple to cream inflorescences from summer through winter. They grow to 4 feet tall.


The giant miscanthus (Miscanthus floridulus) grows from 8 to 10 feet tall and is hardy in zones 5 through 9. This grass has broad foliage that forms a large, rounded clump. The giant miscanthus thrives in full sun and tolerates dry to wet soil conditions.

Cook Stuffing Outside The Turkey

Preparing stuffing outside of the turkey is a good way to ensure sufficient quantities at holiday time, as a double batch can be prepared, half cooked inside the bird and half cooked outside. With the increased popularity of deep frying turkeys, this method of preparing stuffing is useful to know. For vegetarians, this cooking method allows them to enjoy stuffing while remaining meat free. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions


1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Melt the butter in the skillet.


2. Add sausage, onion, poultry seasoning and celery to the skillet. Cook on medium heat until sausage is no longer pink, approximately 8 to 10 minutes.


3. Combine bread cubes, salt, cranberries, apple and pecans in large mixing bowl. Add the sausage mixture. Gradually add the broth to the stuffing until everything is moistened.


4. Spoon the stuffing into the greased pan. Cover it with aluminum foil.


5. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 10 to 15 minutes, or until the top becomes brown. Serve immediately for best flavor.

Treat Canine Pancreatitis & Renal Failure

Pancreatitis and renal failure are common but potentially dangerous conditions that can affect dogs of all ages. Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas is inflamed, which can be caused by many factors including infection, certain medication, obesity and an intake of fatty foods. Renal failure can take place due to age, cancer, trauma and a host of other reasons. Treatments for these two illnesses are fairly similar and need to be administered by a veterinarian.


Instructions


1. Withhold food, water and oral medication from your dog if you are treating him for pancreatitis. The first step in treating pancreatitis is resting the pancreas. The pancreas can rest when it doesn't have to produce digestive enzymes. Restricting your dog from ingesting anything orally will cause this non-production of enzymes and will give the pancreas a break. Consult with your vet to determine the appropriate length of time these items should be withheld.


2. Determine the cause of your dog's renal failure by having your vet perform diagnostics such as blood and urine tests. Acute renal failure can potentially be reversed, depending upon what is causing the problem. If an infection such as leptosporosis caused the failure, antibiotics may help to cure the problem. In addition, if your dog's kidney problem was caused by the giant kidney worm or the ingestion of antifreeze or an Easter Lilly, there are specific treatments for those causes of kidney failure. If the definitive cause of your pet's acute renal failure is diagnosed, your dog has a better chance of recovering.


3. Administer intravenous or subcutaneous fluids to your dog if he has pancreatitis or renal failure. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can occur with both conditions, therefore fluid therapy is essential. In addition, the fluids can help flush out both the pancreas and kidneys, helping to remove any toxins that are in the organs.


4. Give your dog pain medication or antibiotics if prescribed. It is common for dogs with these conditions to experience pain, so your pooch may be given medication to keep him more comfortable. Antibiotics are also usually prescribed to dogs with these conditions to prevent or clear up any infections.

Cook The Perfect Turkey

If you have the honor of hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year, and you have worries about making the perfect turkey, don't fret. Anyone can cook the perfect turkey if he or she knows what to do. Follow these steps to help you roast a delicious, juicy and flavorful turkey. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F. Move the oven rack to the lowest setting.


2. Remove the neck bone and bag of giblets from the inside of the turkey. You can discard the giblets and neck bone or save them to make turkey stock.


3. Rinse the inside and the outside of the turkey with cool water. Use paper towels to pat the turkey dry.


4. Season the inside and outside of the turkey with salt and pepper as desired. Use any additional spices or herbs as desired as well.


5. Place the turkey on a rack in a heavy roasting pan. Be sure that the turkey sits breast side up. You may oil the rack to prevent sticking, if you like.


6. Coat the skin of the turkey with melted butter. Be sure to cover the entire turkey evenly to allow for even browning of the skin.


7. Insert an oven safe thermometer into the inner thigh of the turkey. Be careful to avoid touching any bone with the thermometer.


8. Cover the turkey with a loose foil tent and place the turkey in the oven. Baste the turkey using the turkey drippings or melted butter and a turkey baster every half an hour during cooking if desired.


9. Take the foil tent off the turkey during the last hour of cooking time. This allows the turkey skin to brown and crisp. Start checking internal temperature at this time.


10. Cook the turkey until cooked through. The temperature in the turkey thigh should read 180 degrees F. For turkeys less than ten pounds, you will need approximately 20 minutes of cooking time per pound. For turkeys weighing over ten pounds, you will need approximately 15 minutes of cooking time per pound.


11. Allow the cooked turkey to rest for approximately 20 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute. Carve the turkey as desired and serve. Good accompaniments for roasted turkey include stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce.

Cook Little Scallops

Scallops are well known for their beautiful shells and sweet flavor.


Scallops are among the sweetest of shellfish and the easiest for a cook to work with. Aside from removing a small band of tough muscle on the side of each scallop, they require little preparation. Although big sea scallops look more dramatic on a plate, small bay scallops are equally tasty and often less costly. They are quick and easy to cook in a number of ways. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


Scallops in White Wine Sauce


1. Warm a non-stick skillet over moderate heat. Add 1 tbsp. of butter to the pan. When it stops foaming, add the scallops.


2. Cook gently over moderate heat, shaking the pan frequently to turn the scallops. When they turn from translucent to pale white, they are fully cooked. Season lightly with salt and pepper and turn out into a serving dish.


3. Make a sauce by adding 1/2 cup of white wine to the skillet and raising the heat. Boil the wine and cooking juices together until they have reduced by 2/3. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in another 2 tbsp. of cold butter. Serve the scallops immediately, with a spoonful of sauce.


4. For an alternate version of this dish, pan-sear the scallops quickly in hot oil or clarified butter. Searing brings out the sweetness in the scallops and gives the dish a different appearance.


Bay Scallop Salad


5. Carefully inspect mesclun or another attractive mixture of salad greens, checking for wilted or spoiling leaves. Rinse if necessary and pat dry on paper towels. Divide the greens between several salad plates.


6. Prepare the scallops as directed above. Place the warm scallops around the salad in an asymmetrical pattern, creating a sort of "necklace" around the salad. If desired, a few scallops may be scattered on top of the greens.


7. Drizzle the salad and scallops with a suitable vinaigrette. Mustard-based vinaigrettes provide a stimulating foil for the delicate greens and the sweet scallops, and are especially suited to salad mixtures with strongly flavored leaves. Both saffron and white truffle oil have penetrating, pungent flavors that have a special affinity for scallops, so a vinaigrette featuring either of these ingredients is also appropriate.


8. Garnish the salads with toasted walnuts and serve immediately as a side dish or light lunch.


Scallop Alfredo


9. Warm the Alfredo sauce in a saucepan over moderate heat. Stir regularly and do not allow the sauce to scorch to the bottom of the pot. Alternately, heat the sauce in a microwave oven. Keep warm.


10. Searing the scallops over high heat is preferable for this dish. Remove the scallops from the heat when cooked and keep warm.


11. Bring water to a full rolling boil in a large pot. Cook the fettuccine until al dente. Drain, but do not rinse. Toss with the heated Alfredo sauce, some cheese and 2/3 of the cooked scallops.


12. Portion the pasta into individual bowls and top with the remaining scallops and chopped herbs. Sprinkle with more cheese. Serve immediately.

What Do The Nepalese Eat

Rice is a staple in the Nepalese diet.


Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia; it is nestled between India and China. Mount Everest is located in Nepal, and 29 million people call the country home. The Nepalese people eat a wide variety of foods, most of them colorful and flavorful due to wide variety of spices they incorporate. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Dal Bhat Tarkari


Peppers and garlic are Nepali diet staples.


A typical Nepalese meal is dal bhat tarkari. Dal is a type of lentil dish, a spicy, soupy concoction of lentils made with onions and chillies. Bhaat is boiled rice. Dal bhaat is the staple daily diet of the majority of the Nepalese people. To kick the meal up a notch, they add curried vegetables, takari. This dish is commonly accompanied by pickles, fresh chili peppers and/or chutney.


Spices


Spices save the Nepali diet from being bland.


The Nepali diet is relatively simple but it is not without flavor. The people use a great deal of spices in their cooking to enhance flavors, most notably ginger, garlic, coriander, turmeric, pepper, black peppers, cumin, chilies, cilantro, methi, mustard oil, mustard seeds, ghee, cinnamon, sesame seeds, cloves and even yak butter.


Meat


Meat is consumed occasionally by the Nepalese. When they do eat meat, they tend to go for roasted or grilled meats such as chicken, duck, wild boar, goat, buffalo, pork, fish or mutton. They also eat dried meats which have been prepared over a charcoal fire. Steamed or fried pork dumplings is another consumed meat. Sometimes the meats are included in hot or cold soups. Beef is rarely eaten, mostly due to religious preferences.


Other Foods


Citrus fruits are common in the Nepali diet.


Vegetables make up a healthy portion of the Nepali diet. Nepalese often consume spinach, mustard greens, green beans, cauliflower, cabbage and potatoes with bamboo shoots. Sometimes fruit is on the menu; popular options include lemons, mandarin oranges, Asian pears and limes. Rice is eaten every day. Hot or cold soups are a part of the Nepali diet and they are usually made with grains. Flat breads are munched on for a snack between meals.


Desserts


Unlike many parts of the world, desserts are not served with every meal in Nepal. When it is eaten, it usually involves curd of some kind. Curd is eaten on its own or with some fruit (usually dried) added. Silky yogurt is another consumed dessert, as is rice or carrot pudding. Milk balls (boiled milk, vinegar, and sugar) are another treat.


Beverages


Tea is the hot beverage of choice in Nepal.


Many Nepalese start their day with a hot, milky, sweet tea for breakfast. Another popular drink is chang, a rice or barley-beer-type drink that is made in people's homes. Keeping with the alcohol theme, rakshi is a spirit that is made from grain, rice or potato. Tonga is consumed as well, a form of homemade wine.

Factor Expressions In Algebra

In Algebra, factoring is one of the most basic methods of simplifying a quadratic equation or expression. Teachers and textbooks often emphasize its importance in basic Algebra classes, and with good reason: as students delve deeper and deeper into Algebra, they will eventually find themselves dealing with several quadratic expressions at the same time, and factoring helps to simplify them. Once simplified, they become much easier to solve.


Instructions


1. Find the key number for the expression by multiplying the whole numbers in the first and last terms of the expression. For example, in the expression 2x^2 + x -- 6, multiply 2 and -6 to get -12.


2. Calculate factors of the key number that also add up to the middle term. With the expression given above, you must find two numbers that not only have a product of -12, but also have a sum of 1, since there is only a single term in the middle. In this case, the numbers are -12 and 1, since 4 X -3 = -12 and 4 + (-3) = 1.


3. Create a 2 X 2 grid and enter the first and last terms of the expression in the upper left-hand corner and lower right-hand corner, respectively. With the expression given above, the first and last terms are 2x^2 and -6.


4. Enter the two factors into either of the other two boxes of the grid, including the variable as well. With the expression given above, the factors are 4 and -3, and you would enter them into the other two boxes of the grid as 4x and -3x.


5. Find the common factor that the numbers in each of the two rows share. With the expression given above, the numbers in the first row are 2x and -3x, and their common factor is x. In the second row, the numbers are 4x and -6, and their common factor is 2.


6. Find the common factor that the numbers in each of the two columns share. With the expression given above, the numbers in the first column are 2x^2 and -4x, and their common factor is 2x. The numbers in the second column are -3x and -6, and their common factor is -3.


7. Complete the factored expression by writing out two expressions based on the common factors you found in the rows and columns. In the example examined above, the rows yielded the common factors of X and 2, so the first expression is (X + 2). Since the columns yielded the common factors of 2x and -3, the second expression is (2x - 3). Thus, the final result is (2x - 3)(X + 2), which is the factored version of the original expression.

The cost of meals is a significant portion of every budget, and frugal people look to save money wherever possible. The basic stir fry recipe is to cook vegetables in a wok, add a protein source and a sauce, and cook it all together. Serve the results over rice. Use your imagination to cook a different stir fry every week.


Vegetarian


Meat is the most expensive ingredient in most main dishes. Cook vegetarian meals one day a week. Make chili or bean casseroles, investigate Mexican or Italian dishes, or indulge in a large colorful salad with cheese cubes. Reduce the amount of meat that you eat on other days of the week to create even more savings.


Lunch


If you are in the habit of eating lunch in restaurants or fast food places, stop it immediately. Invest in a set of lunch containers, including an attractive bag and a wide-mouth thermos. Pack your lunch every day to save a lot of money. Pack leftovers from dinner the night before, create attractive salads or make homemade sweet treats. Make a tasty meal that you'll look forward to eating, so you don't feel deprived.


Soup


Turn small bits of leftovers into a tasty soup, and you'll create a filling meal without buying any new food. Use leftover chicken or turkey bones with some carrots and onions to create a broth, and add any leftover veggies you have in the refrigerator. You can add black beans and salsa for a tortilla-style soup, or potato slices and ham bits for a German-inspired version.


Breakfast for Dinner


There is no law that breakfast food has to be eaten only at breakfast time. Switch your meals up once in a while and create an inexpensive breakfast feast for dinner. Make piles of pancakes, broil a package of sausage, and slice strawberries for a side dish. Have an omelet night to use up leftover bits of meats and cheeses. Dehull Bean Sprouts

Bean sprouts have an inedible hull that must be removed before eating the sprouts.


Bean seeds have small hulls on the seed that holds the germinating plant in place until it sprouts. After it sprouts, the hulls still cling to the small plants. The hulls are similar to popcorn hulls, and are undesirable to eat because they can get stuck in your teeth and taste bitter. Before serving fresh sprouts, remove the hulls from the sprouts by using a rinse-and-soak method. The best container for this is a salad spinner, but you also can use a colander or bowl. Instructions


Salad Spinner


1. Place the sprouts inside a salad spinner, and put the spinner inside its solid base. Break up the clump of sprouts by pulling the strands apart with your fingers.


2. Rinse the sprouts with water. Move the sprouts around with your fingers to ensure every sprout gets wet. Fill the spinner with water. Some hulls should start to float to the surface of the water. Turn off the water when the spinner is full.


3. Continue to pull the sprouts apart with your fingers. Repeat this process to loosen all sprouts. The looser the sprouts are, the more hulls will rise to the surface of the water.


4. Pour out the water every few minutes to remove the hulls from the spinner. Fill the spinner with water again, and continue to separate the sprouts to release the hulls. Repeat the process until you are satisfied with the amount of hulls removed from the sprouts.


5. Drain the water from the sprouts. Spin the sprouts through the spinner to remove excess water from the sprouts. Replace the sprouts into the original container and store in the refrigerator until you want to use them on food.


Colander


6. Place the sprouts in a colander. Place the colander inside a larger bowl. Loosen the sprouts with your fingers.


7. Rinse the sprouts with water, filling up the bowl while rinsing. Continue to loosen the sprouts. While the sprouts loosen, the hulls will rise to the surface.


8. Remove the colander from the bowl, and drain the water from the bowl. Replace the colander inside the bowl and fill with water again. Continue the rinsing, spreading and draining process until you are satisfied with the amount of hulls removed from the sprouts.


9. Drain the sprouts and replace in the original container.

Mix Potting Soil Using Chicken Manure

Chicken manure can be used to make rich potting soil.


Chickens are a useful, productive pet and a key ingredient for a family that wants to pursue a self-sustaining lifestyle. Chickens do eat plenty of grass and plants, but they also produce eggs and manure. When properly utilized, this manure makes the perfect soil for potted plants, filling up beds and working into ground soil. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Combine one part chicken manure with two parts brown matter -- a mix of leaves, bark and chicken coup bedding -- in your compost pile and mix together.


2. Add enough moisture to wet the entire pile. Allow the pile to heat to 150 degrees F for three days.


3. Turn the pile and let it heat again.


4. Loosely cover the pile with a tarp and let it cure for 60 days. You'll know when its ready because the compost will smell like potting soil.


5. Add directly to pots, planters and containers as potting soil for plant growth and vitality.

Store Homemade Chicken Broth

Chicken broth, which has a milder and less intense flavor than chicken stock, is fairly easy to make at home. The basic process simply involves simmering chicken and vegetables in water, then straining the resulting product and saving the flavorful liquid. Making chicken stock is more involved, as you need to roast the chicken bones and include them in the pot along with the meat and vegetables. You can use homemade chicken broth in a wide variety of recipes beyond the obvious chicken soup. Use it to deglaze pans, for example, or as the liquid base for your next risotto. Instructions


1. Cover the container, sealing the broth tightly with plastic wrap. Alternatively, you may transfer the broth into an airtight container. By this point, you should have already strained the broth to remove the meat and vegetable pieces; you may have skimmed the fat off as well. If you have already removed the fat, don't worry; but if you haven't, there is no need to do so until just before you wish to use the broth.


2. Put the sealed container of broth into the refrigerator. Use the refrigerated broth within two to three days.


3. Freeze the broth for longer storage. Transfer it into freezer-safe containers that hold as much as you generally use at one time. For example, if you generally use only 2 cups of broth at once, freeze the broth in 2-cup units. You can use solid freezer-safe containers or plastic freezer bags. Use your frozen broth within three months for the best results.

Cook Chicken Breasts

Chicken breast is among the healthiest meats available, lower in cholesterol and fat than many other kinds of meat and versatile enough to be used in an infinite number of recipes. Instructions


1. Use dry heat cooking methods to prepare chicken breasts, such as roasting, frying, grilling, sauteing and baking. When using dry heat, cook your chicken on high heat for about 8 to 10 minutes. To ensure that the meat cooks evenly, pound the chicken breasts until all pieces are an even thickness.


2. Cook with moist heat methods, such as poaching, baking in parchment paper, steaming, slow cooking or even microwaving. When cooking chicken breasts with moist heat, it is best to use a lower temperature and cook for about 15 minutes.


3. Keep chicken breast moist and juicy by brining before you cook. To brine chicken breast, place thawed meat in salt water and refrigerator for at least 1 hour.


4. Make sure that your cooked meat is free from bacteria by using a meat thermometer as you cook. Chicken must reach at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure that all bacteria has been killed; however, do not cook higher than 170 degrees, or you will end up with very dry chicken.

Hatch Wild Turkey Eggs

Hatching turkey eggs can be tricky.


Wild turkeys can be fun to raise, and are a healthy alternative to store-bought frozen turkey. In the wild, these beautiful birds mate in late March and lay a total of nine to 12 eggs (laying one egg each day). Hens incubate them for about 28 days, and baby turkeys, called poults, leave the nest in the first 24 hours. Hatching wild turkey eggs in captivity is a very different process.


Instructions


1. Before you can hatch wild turkey eggs, you obviously have to find some first. Finding them in the wild is very difficult, and it may be illegal to collect them if you can find them. Fortunately, you can order eggs from turkey farmers. Just be aware that not all the eggs you buy will be fertile.


2. Warm up the incubator. When your eggs are on the way, fire up your incubator so that it is operating properly and is at the desired temperature and humidity. Turkey eggs need to be kept at 99.25 degrees Fahrenheit and the relative humidity should be between 50 and 55 percent.


3. In the wild, one egg is laid each day, and incubation begins after approximately half of the eggs are laid. So when you first receive your eggs, let them sit at about 50 to 60 degrees for six to 12 hours. Make sure you do not refrigerate the eggs because low temperatures can kill the embryos.


4. Wild turkey hens turn their eggs and move them around occasionally. Using either the automatic egg turner installed in your incubator or your hands, turn the eggs three to five times every 24 hours. Make sure to follow the instructions on your incubator to achieve the proper turning frequency.


5. Stop turning the eggs three days before the eggs are due to hatch. This allows the chick to settle into position so it can break out of the shell more easily.


6. Increase the relative humidity to 65 percent three days prior to hatching. If the air is too dry, the poult may stick to the inside of the egg and die.


7. Be prepared to take care of the poults with feed, water, 90 to 95 degree enclosure, light and plenty of space.

Start A Mobile Food Business

Starting a business, even if you have the capital, is not an easy undertaking. If you have never opened a business before, you might want to consult with a business attorney, especially for a mobile food business. There are things you must check prior to opening a business, but the most important thing is finding a location. Once you find a location, you are ready to move on to the rest of the steps.


Instructions


1. Prepare a business plan. To get any kind of financing, you will need to provide the bank or private lender with a business plan that outlines what the business will be doing, where the location is, why you think the business will do well and how and when you plan to pay back the money.


2. Procure all equipment, including but not limited to the truck or cart, cooking utensils, grills if they did not come with the truck or cart, refrigeration and storage cabinets.


3. Get all the business licenses you need for your city, county and state. You will need a sales tax license (usually from the state), an occupational license (usually from the county) and a license from the city. This license shows how many employees and how much equipment, such as soda machines, you may have. You may also need a license from the Department of Agriculture. The Department of Agriculture issues licenses for many different types of business that need to be inspected by the state, including food businesses.


4. Call to set up an inspection with the local food service board or Department of Agriculture (whichever handles that in your state). Your cart or truck must meet all of their requirements for serving food.


5. Prepare a list of perishables you will need. You might want to start out small, as most things can be kept for only two days before selling. As you get to know the traffic flow for your location, you can purchase more perishables.

Green Jobs Definition

Production and maintenance of wind power is a source of green jobs.


Since President Barack Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law in the winter of 2009, there has been much talk about the creation of "green jobs." Approximately $60 billion from the stimulus package has been allocated for green industries, such as renewable energy, with the purpose of creating green jobs. However, an official definition of what a green job actually is has yet to be determined, though many informal definitions exist.


Consensus Definition


In the media, the simplest, most commonly agreed-upon definition of a green job is "a job that benefits both the economy and the environment." Certain politicians and journalists also consider a true green job to be a "blue collar" job in an industry that seeks to improve the quality of the Earth, such as renewable energy. For example, David Foster, the director of the BlueGreen Alliance, defined a green job as "a blue-collar job done for a green purpose" in an article for Workforce.com.


Debate Over Definition


However, the precise definition of a green job is still subject to debate. As Daniel Stone wrote in a July 2009 "Newsweek" article, certain energy sources--specifically natural gas--produce less carbon dioxide pollution than burning coal or oil. However, natural gas remains an unsustainable pollutant. Thus, a specific definition of a green job is subjective, as there is no consensus on whether a job in an energy industry that pollutes less than traditional fossil fuels could be considered "green."


Significance


Green jobs have been cited as a potential solution for the current economic crisis. Since many green jobs require skills typical of other industries, such as manufacturing, politicians such as Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) have cited green jobs as a way to employ skilled workers who have lost their jobs due to layoffs in traditional industries. Additionally, as the world's oil reserves are increasingly depleted, necessitating more energy from renewable sources, green jobs are almost certain to become much more prevalent in future decades.


Types


There are numerous kinds of green jobs. Professor Raquel Pinderhughes, writing for UrbanHabitat.org, lists 22 different sectors of green industry. Some of her designated green jobs include: building new energy-efficient homes and retrofitting old, energy-inefficient residences; urban agriculture; converting vehicles to run on biofuels and biodiesel; non-toxic chemical production; composting and recycling; and hazardous material clean-up. The most commonly agreed-upon source of current and future green jobs is alternative energy--specifically, solar, wind and geothermal power.


Future


Due to its nebulous formal definition, there is little data on the specific number of green jobs created by the stimulus package or any other form of government or corporate action. However, as the U.S. strives to achieve energy independence, a greater demand for green jobs is inevitable. Further government subsidy and corporate investment should be expected, and while green industry is growing slowly, it is more likely than not that the number of green jobs will increase in future decades.

Are Field Trips Good For Education

The debate over field trips has been ongoing for several decades. Some educators are strong believers regarding the benefit of such ventures. Others are devout protesters of the practice believing that it takes away from the curriculum. There are always other considerations besides education regarding field trips and their viability that unfortunately are determining factors.


Pros


Field trips provide an enhanced form of education. The subject matter leading up to a field trip is discussed, dissected and re-hashed multiple times. The field trip itself is the most beneficial in remembering the information pertaining to the subject.


Taking children into the world for out of the classroom experiences teaches more than just the subject matter; it teaches social skills and an ability to analyze and form an opinion. The social skills required on a field trip are many including good manners, politeness and courtesy. Having access to these socially acceptable graces is only the beginning of the knowledge obtained during the course of an outing.


Research has shown that students retain more practical knowledge about a subject if they have had a chance to see it, touch it, work with it and explore it. Having this type of hands on experience affects a deeper understanding of the subject. Human memory works better with tangible knowledge.


While books can teach and computers can instruct, it doesn't compare to a real person who possesses an undeniable understanding of the information, whether it be prehistoric, music, art, modern, war or anything else that is limited by the walls of the classroom. For example; a person who has lived through a war and is now a guide for the war section of a museum can provide more in-depth material that a book written on abstracts.


Cons


The downside to field trips in these modern times revolves around liability issues and a lack of available faculty and volunteers to supervise. School directors and superintendents are very aware of the possibilities of lawsuits and claims that schools cannot afford. Regrettably these conditions are a major factor in deciding whether or not to expand a classroom's learning venue.


Severe cutbacks in educational budgets have resulted in the loss of staff to supervise field trips and parents are hard pressed to get time off of work to volunteer in a supervisory capacity.

Substitute Butter For Vegetable Shortening

Butter adds flavor and texture to recipes that shortening cannot provide.


Almost every baking recipe calls for some kind of fat to be added to retain the moisture, flavor and texture of the baked good. This can take the form of oil, shortening or butter. However, while oil and shortening are full fat, butter has a slight amount of water. These items are interchangeable, however the end result will be slightly different. Butter adds a creamier flavor to any recipe and, in a pinch, can easily be used instead of shortening. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Chill the butter before use so that it retains a solid nature, similar to shortening, when baked.


2. Read the recipe to figure out how much shortening is called for.


3. Measure out the same amount of butter as the amount of shortening that is called for. The ratio is one part butter to one part shortening -- 1 cup of butter is equivalent to 1 cup of shortening.


4. If the butter is salted, remove 1/2 tsp. of salt from the recipe for every 1 cup of butter used. For example, if 1/2 cup salted butter is substituted for 1/2 cup shortening, remove 1/4 tsp. salt from the recipe.


5. If the recipe does not turn out as moist as you wanted it, add another 1/8 cup of butter in addition to the one to one ratio when baking. For example, use 1 1/8 cup of butter for every 1 cup of shortening called for.

The open, airy and urban design of lofts can make designing a kitchen challenging. Combine form with function to create a space that has all the kitchen necessities but still carries the open loft architecture throughout. Consider the designs of kitchens in home d cor magazines that are aesthetically pleasing when coming up with ideas. To solidify an idea on the ideal kitchen, consider space, form, layout and style. Space


Evaluate the amount of square footage there is to work with. How much physical space exists for the actual kitchen footprint? Knowing the size limitations helps plan the rest of the loft's kitchen design. A smaller kitchen might benefit from a galley kitchen design with counter tops and appliances on opposite walls. A larger kitchen might be able to accommodate extras like an island or wine storage. A more modern kitchen can take up less room due to sleek appliances and pared down decor, while a traditional kitchen usually requires a bit more square footage.


Function


Experienced chefs and cooks want different features in a kitchen than those who frequently eat out. For some people, having a gas range may be non-negotiable. Others may want a built-in cook top. Environmentally conscious loft owners may opt for built-in trash compaction and recycling. Basics like a refrigerator, dishwasher, sink, oven and microwave all must be planned for within the space.


Establish an outline of the tasks and functions the kitchen should accommodate. Be sure to leave room for plenty of counter space to prepare food.


Layout


Lofts have a lot of open space and usually plenty of light, so once plumbing and electrical fixtures are designed, the layout portion should allow creative ideas to reign. With specific information on the size of the kitchen and desired kitchen functions in hand, planning the kitchen layout becomes less of a headache. Some design ideas are to place kitchens in the corner of a home, while newer design options focus on having the kitchen in the center or core of the living space. A well-designed kitchen layout can make smaller kitchens seem bigger and make larger kitchens seem more intimate.


Style


The style of the kitchen ties in all of the above elements with the interior design of the loft. Modern kitchens might choose appliances in stainless steel and an urban material like concrete or glass for counter tops. A Euro-modern approach could combine granite or quartz counter tops with glossy laminate cabinets. While loft spaces tend to lend themselves more to urban or modern design ideas, enthusiasts of a more traditional kitchen design can still use real wood cabinets and granite counter tops successfully within the space.

Instructions

Store Quail Eggs

Quail eggs are much smaller than chicken eggs and are colored much differently.


Eggs can be used in many different kinds of cooking and baking. When storing eggs, you must meet certain specifications to make sure that the eggs remain undamaged and safe from the infestation of bacteria. In addition, because of the variety of eggs that exist, you should be aware of any special considerations that you might need for taking care of the particular type of eggs you are storing. Instructions


1. Carefully place the eggs in an egg carton. Try to get some small-egg cartons if your local grocery store carries them, as quail eggs are much smaller in size than normal eggs and will thus be prone to shifting when stored in a larger carton. If you cannot acquire a small-egg carton, be very careful with a larger carton when moving it.


2. Place the carton inside a storage area with a controlled temperature of no more than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. To keep the eggs safe from bacteria, they need to be cooled constantly. Any average refrigerator will do this job well.


3. Keep anything that might fall on the carton away from the carton. Do not place anything on top of the carton either; doing so might damage the eggs. Because of how soft quail eggs are, you must be extra careful to make sure they are not dented or cracked when in storage.


4. Keep the eggs on the top shelf. This will ensure that they get plenty of ventilation as well as an abundance of cool air around them. If you cannot store them on a top shelf, keep them as high off the floor as you can.

Make Crab Cake

Crab cakes are a delicacy wherever crabs are found, and are particularly popular in New Orleans and along the mid-Atlantic coast and Chesapeake Bay.


This recipe is fairly generic, but regional variations are possible using differing spice mixes to alter the flavor. For example, New Orleans crab cakes might use Tony Chachere's brand seasoning, while Maryland-style crab cakes use Old Bay brand seasoning. In general crab cakes should not be overseasoned, or the flavor of the crab itself will be overpowered.


Crab cakes can be served as appetizers, main courses or in sandwiches. Leftovers reheat well, though in our experience crab cakes are so popular that leftovers are rare. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions


Crab Cake


1. Mix together the parsley, onion, garlic, mustard, Worcestershire, eggs, lemon juice and mayonnaise in a large mixing bowl.


Flake the crab meat together with bread crumbs. Add to mixing bowl.


2. Season with salt and pepper and combine well, being careful not to mash up the crab meat too much.


Divide the mixture into equal portions. Flatten into patties.


3. If possible, refrigerate for 30 minutes before cooking.


Coat each patty with crushed potato chips.


4. Heat enough butter and oil to cover the bottom of a large frying pan.


Gently slide the crab patties into the pan and fry over medium-high heat until golden brown on both sides, usually about three to four minutes per side.


5. Remove from heat and drain well on paper towels or paper bags.


Serve immediately.

Remove Water From An Oil Filter

Oil in your water is very bad for your engine. Oil in water can also make your car smoke, which may lead to problems with local authorities for emissions violations. Usually, your oil filter will collect any water that may end up in your system, but this water can also escape back into the system. You need to get the water out of the filter for good. It is easy to remove water from an oil filter with a little creative thinking; there are two methods for achieving the desired results.


Instructions


First Method


1. Place a large glob of modeling clay onto the middle of a dinner plate.


2. Press the oil filter right side up into the modeling clay.


3. Place the filter/plate combination in a very sunny spot on your deck or porch on a hot day. Make sure the filter is placed up high where children and animals cannot reach it, as motor oil is poisonous.


4. Leave the filter out for the entire day to allow the water to evaporate. Keep moving it if you have to so that it stays in the hottest spot you can find.


Second Method


5. Place a good amount of kitty litter into the bottom of a plastic disposable food storage container large enough to hold the filter and have plenty of room left over.


6. Place a thin layer of paper towels over the kitty litter.


7. Place the filter inside the container on its side.


8. Using the modeling clay, build a wall around the open end of the filter.


9. Cover the filter with the rice, but be careful to not let the rice get near or into the opening of the filter. This is the reason for the play dough wall--to keep the rice out.


10. Place the lid tightly onto the container.


11. Heat up the outside of the container using a hair dryer, being careful not to let the heat get high enough on any spot to melt the plastic. Keep heating the container for about a half an hour.


12. Set the whole thing into a sunny sport on your deck or porch for a couple of hours in the middle of the day. You want the hottest sun you can get onto this container. Keep the lid closed at all times.


13. Remove the filter from the container while the container is still hot.


14. Place the lid back on the container and tape it closed with duct tape. Dispose of the whole thing in your trash.

Instructions


1. Fill a small bowl at least 1 inch deep with your choice of sprinkles.


2. Spread a thick layer of icing onto the top of a cool cupcake and use your knife to smooth the icing. It does not need to be perfectly smooth but try to avoid any obvious lumps or swirls in the icing.


3. Hold the cupcake upside down and dip it into the bowl of sprinkles. Gently turn the cupcake as necessary to completely cover all of the icing with sprinkles.


4. Repeat the process with all of your cupcakes, refilling the bowl of sprinkles as necessary.

Instructions


1. Determine whether the chicken is raw or cooked. You must be much more careful with raw chicken than cooked chicken. Cooked chicken can be kept longer than raw chicken in the refrigerator.


2. Cook refrigerated raw chicken, bought before its expiration date, within one to two days of purchase.


3. Cooked chicken can safely be stored in the refrigerator for three to four days. However, if the chicken is covered with sauce or gravy, it should be eaten within one to two days. Likewise, chicken nuggets or patties should be eaten within one to two days.


4. Keep chicken in the freezer if you plan on keeping it for extended amount of time. A fresh, whole chicken can be stored in the freezer for up to a year, while uncooked parts can be frozen safely for up to nine months. Cooked chicken can generally be kept in the freezer for up to four months.

Instructions


1. Start with a design budget. The budget will determine what designs are possible to some extent. The budget should include display units, shelving and counter space. It may also include lighting and a security system.


2. Design a layout. The basic layout of the store includes the aisles and the configuration of the sales counter or counters. The layout must take customer movement into account. Customers are most comfortable if they don't have to come into physical contact with other customers. This means that aisles must be wide enough to accommodate two people going in opposite directions so that they have room to pass each other. The layout also has to allow enough display areas to provide the customers with plenty of choices without making the sales floor too crowded.


3. Create a security system. This can be an elaborate system of alarms and cameras, or it may be as simple as convex mirrors put in strategic areas. Look at the layout to determine which areas will be the most difficult for employees to monitor. Those areas need some type of security equipment.


4. Set up special display areas. Some retail stores design their aisles with end caps to display items at the end of each aisle. Clothing stores use open areas for mannequin displays. Other retail stores design display tables for interesting or seasonal items.


5. Make it easy for customers to find what they need. Signs can help customers find different types of items. Another sign will show them where to check out. For a large retail store, provide a customer service area where customers can ask questions and get information.

Beans are one of the most recognizable legumes.


Legumes are a family of flowering plants which are believed to comprise about 1/12 of all flowering plants identified to date. They are present on every continent, excluding Antarctica, and can be found in a wide range of environments. Though legumes take such a wide variety of forms and can be found in diverse ecosystems and climates, they all have one trait in common. All legumes reproduce through their fruit, which takes the form of a seed pod. This is the defining characteristic of a plant in the legume family. Use Himalayan Salt On Food

Himalayan salt is most commonly used in bath salts or beauty products rather than in foods, because table salt is easily and inexpensively found. However, Himalayan salt can be used for any culinary purpose. It is usually found in coarse crystal or "rock" form. Instructions


1. Purchase finely ground or coarse granulated Himalayan salt. Use the finely ground salt directly in any salt shaker and in any recipe. The taste is nearly identical to regular table salt, and you will not jeopardize the flavor or quality of any of your favorite foods or recipes.


2. Grind coarse granulated salt in a salt grinder. The crystals are too large to be used for cooking unless they are ground or diluted in broth or water.


3. Break up the crystals. Unlike table salt, Himalayan salt does not contain anti-clumping agents to allow it to flow smoothly out of a salt shaker. If it starts to clump, lightly rap the shaker or container against a surface until the clumps separate and the salt flows freely.

1. Lay the watermelon on its longest side. Cut a thin slice to flatten the end. Set the flattened surface down against the work surface. Cut off the top third of the watermelon and set it aside.


2. Scoop away the inside of the watermelon using a melon baller. Place the removed fruit into a bowl and set it aside. Drain any juice from the watermelon shell.


3. Fill the hollow ark with the balled melon and other cleaned and sliced fruit.


4. Replace the lid and store in the refrigerator. Remove the lid to serve.

Make Tofu Taste Good

Tofu slices can be flavored, baked and served on rice.


Tofu is readily available in supermarkets, but many people lack the knowledge of prepare it. Made from soybeans, the food has a mild or bland taste, but it's also versatile: You can use it in baked dishes, sauces and stir fries. Well prepared, this inexpensive and healthy protein has a delightfully chewy texture and can absorb any flavor that is cooked with it. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Make sure not to select a silken tofu. Silken tofu is only ideal for blending into sauces. Water-packed tofu, found in a refrigerator, is a better bet. Extra-firm style is desirable for creating highly flavored tofu, although firm will do if it is all you can get. Organic tofu tends to be of higher quality and taste better.


2. Freeze the tofu, then thaw it.


3. Squeeze the tofu. Often pressing it between two plate bottoms helps with this. Freezing, thawing and squeezing help to make tofu taste good by making the texture more porous and allowing more of the original moisture to escape. Much of the bean taste of tofu is removed with the water.


4. Cut the into the pieces you want to use. Cubes are good for stir-fry, and slabs are good for sandwiches. Whatever shape you choose, make it fairly small or thin so that the marinade can penetrate it easily. You can dab the tofu with towels or leave it out for a few hours on a cutting board to make it even more dry if you want.


5. Marinate the tofu. You can use any seasonings you like to make the tofu taste good, although it is a good idea to cover the tofu with a liquid in a sealed container, so usually a little water helps to extend the marinade. Soy sauce is a traditional tofu marinade. Vinegars such as apple cider, plum, balsamic or white also work, as does liquid smoke, herbs and spices.


6. Drain the tofu after marinating it for an hour or more. Reserve the marinade. Stir a few spoonfuls of oil into the tofu, and spread it out on a baking sheet. Bake in a hot oven until it begins to turn golden and crispy. (The time will vary depending on how wet the tofu is, but it might take a while.)


7. Add the tofu to whatever dish you are preparing, and include some of the reserved marinade if you like. It is good hot or cold.

Store Turnips In The Ground

Turnip harvest should be delayed until the first frost.


Turnips and other root vegetables store well at temperatures near freezing, particularly in high humidity. Before storing your turnip harvest, brush off any dirt and examine all the vegetables for blemishes and signs of rot. Discard any that are damaged, because healthy turnips can start to rot when stored with rotting vegetables. Even if you do not have a root cellar, you can still store turnips for 3 to 4 months by burying them in the ground. Storing them inside a buried storage container, such as a new trash can, can prevent rodent entry. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Sterilize a 20-gallon trash can or a similar storage container. The container should have a lid and 2 to 3 holes in the bottom for drainage.


2. Dig a hole in the ground that is 2 to 4 inches deeper than the storage container and about 1 to 2 inches wider.


3. Insert the storage container into the hole in the ground.


4. Place a 2- to 3-inch layer of straw on the bottom of the container to protect the turnips.


5. Layer your turnips in the container on top of the straw. Add about 1 inch of additional straw on top of the first layer of turnips. Continue layering additional turnips and straw.


6. Place the lid on the storage container, but do not secure it tightly. Leave it slightly askew to allow air circulation.


7. Pile 1 to 3 feet of straw on top of and around the lid for insulation.

Vegetable Beef Cat Food


1. Place the raw beef and beef broth into a small saucepan and heat over low heat until beef is thoroughly cooked.


2. Shred beef with a fork while it is still in the broth.


3. Mix in the minced carrot, barley grass powder and oatmeal.


4. Store in an airtight container and keep in the refrigerator. Use within one week.


Turkey and Rice Cat Food


5. Combine ground turkey, organ meat, neck and brown rice in a mixing bowl.


6. Mash the broccoli with a fork and add to the mixing bowl.


7. Stir olive oil into the bowl, continuing to stir all ingredients until they are thoroughly combined.


8. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.


Baked Trout Cat Food


9. Beat the egg in a small mixing bowl with a whisk.


10. Dip the trout fillet in the egg, and then dip the fillet in the oatmeal.


11. Grease the baking sheet with the vegetable oil.


12. Place the trout fillet onto the baking sheet and bake in a preheated 350 F oven for 15 minutes.


Flip the fish over and bake for another 15 minutes.


13. Place the trout into your cat's dish to cool. Once cooled, break into bite-size pieces with a fork and serve.

A great way to get students excited about a topic you are teaching is to take them on a field trip that reinforces what they are studying. A supermarket is an optimal choice for a field trip for students because of the variety of topics that can be focused on in the grocery store. This type of field trip can encompass the study of math, nutrition and home economics. In most cases, the store workers will be more than accommodating to your students, provided they are given advance notice and you visit when it's not busy.


Budget


A grocery store is an appropriate setting to teach young people work within a budget. The lesson involves giving a shopping list and a set budget to different groups of students. The activity requires the teacher to visit the store ahead of time to determine the cost of the items on the list. Once at the store, the students are given a set amount of time to buy everything on their list while staying within their budget. As an extra incentive, students who spend less than their budgeted amount are allowed to use their extra money to buy dessert.


Recipes and Measurements


Visiting a supermarket is an excellent way to reinforce the concept of measurements for home economics students. Before visiting the store, students should spend time studying measurements such as tablespoons, cups, ounces and quarts. On the day of the store visit, groups of students should be given different recipes and sent to buy the appropriate ingredients that are as close as possible to the amount needed. The teacher will review the students' selections to make sure they made appropriate choices before buying the items.


Healthy Choices


You can help young students understand make wise food choices in a grocery store. Before the visit, review types of food items with the children and categorize them into either healthful or unhealthful choices. For example, you could ask the children to choose whether fried chicken or baked chicken should be placed in the healthful choice category. When you take your trip to the store, give the students a list of foods and have them choose a healthful example and an unhealthful example for each one. At the end of the lesson, allow each child to choose a healthful snack to buy.
